Whitworth men win Blue Jay Invite

Nate Montgomery had game highs of 19 points and nine rebounds to power the Whitworth Pirates to a 70-60 victory over the host Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in the championship game of the Blue Jay Invitational on Saturday at Goldfarb Gym in Baltimore.

David Riley scored 16, Ross Nakamura tallied 14 points and five assists and Bo Gregg added 11 points for the Pirates (2-0), who shot 46 percent from the floor for the game while holding the Blue Jays (1-1) to 32 percent shooting.

The teams traded leads nine times over the first 14 minutes of the second half. But Riley hit back-to-back 3-pointers to turn a 52-52 game into a 59-53 lead and the Pirates never trailed again.

Riley earned MVP honors for the tournament. Nakamura also made the all-tournament team.

•Renado Parker and Shawn Henderson scored 16 points apiece to lead the North Idaho Cardinals (7-0) to an 85-49 romp over the Grays Harbor Chokers at the Findlay Hyundai Classic in Coeur d’Alene.

BJ Shearry added 13 points for NIC, while Guy-Marc Michel topped the Cardinals with nine rebounds.

•Chris Sprinker hit all nine of his shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 22 points as the 13th-ranked Central Washington Wildcats pounded the Multnomah Lions 135-50 in a regular-season opener at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg.

Giovonne Woods and Colton Monti added 21 points apiece for the Wildcats, whose 85-point margin of victory was the largest in school history. The 135 points scored tied for the second most in school history. The record is 139 set in a win over Lewis-Clark State in 1979.

Central led by 53 points at the half and made 33 of 51 shots (65 percent) in the first 20 minutes of play.

Women

Carine Reimink scored 14 of her career-high 18 points in the second half and the Colorado State Rams (1-2) held off the Idaho Vandals 69-60 in non-conference play in Fort Collins, Colo.

Yinka Olorunnife topped the Vandals (0-3) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Derisa Taleni added 14 points.

The Vandals pulled within 59-58 with 3:51 left in the game, but a jumper by Reimink and a 6-for-6 effort at the free-throw line sealed the win for the Rams.

Idaho’s Charlotte Otero totaled seven points, six assists and three steals.

•Kaisey Stillar scored 17 points and Meghan Eisenmann added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (2-0) to an 84-80 victory over the Lane Titans at the Shoreline (Wash.) Crossover tournament.

Bianca Arellano chipped in with 13 points for the Sasquatch, who shot 49 percent from the floor for the game.

Sarah Broisma scored a game-high 21 for Lane.
