Kimpel wins Border Clash

Andrew Kimpel of North Central was the top finisher at the 10th annual Border Clash, a 4.4-kilometer race at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

Kimpel finished in 14 minutes, 7.3 seconds to lead Washington to a 45-144 win in the boys race against Oregon.

Washington runners swept the top 14 places in the boys race, which features the best high school runners in Oregon and Washington. Forty runners from each state are chosen to run.

Two other North Central runners, Jeff Howard and Leon Dean, finished in the top 10. Howard placed seventh, finishing in 14:22.89, while Dean was 10th in 14:29.36.

North Central won the 3A state cross country title earlier this month, the Indians’ third consecutive state championship. In that race, Kimpel finished second, Howard third and Dean fifth.

Jordan Baker of Mead placed 18th at the Border Clash, finishing in 14:39.73, and teammate Jordan Curnutt was 21st in 14:46.80. Mt. Spokane’s Allan Schroeder finished in 14:57.08, good for 33rd place.

Washington has now won the boys race seven times.

In the girls race, Oregon runners swept the top four spots and beat Washington 73-98.
