Gonzaga topples Utah at WBCA Classic tourney
Heather Bowman scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 60-55 victory over the Utah Utes at the WBCA Classic tournament in Milwaukee.
Vivian Frieson added 12 points for Gonzaga (6-1).
Courtney Vandersloot, who scored a career-high 32 points in Gonzaga’s 80-77 loss to Marquette on Friday night, left the game with a right ankle injury in the second half after scoring just five points.
Kalee Whipple had 16 points for Utah (1-4), which lost its fourth straight game.
In a back-and-forth second half, Bowman put the Bulldogs on top for good at 51-50 with a pair of free throws with 5:21 remaining. Tiffanie Shives sealed the victory by hitting 3 of 4 free throws in the final 17 seconds.
Bowman scored 18 points in the first half – including Gonzaga’s first 12 – as she single-handedly gave the Bulldogs a 12-8 lead.
Gonzaga shot just 30.8 percent (20 of 65) for the game, hit only 1 of 13 from 3-point range and made 19 of 28 free-throw attempts. Utah shot 36.8 percent from the floor and made 10 of 15 free throws.
Georgia 75, Eastern Washington 51: Ashley Houts tossed in a game-high 22 points and Angel Robinson added nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds to power the Bulldogs (5-1) to a victory over the Eagles (2-3) in the championship game of the Lady Rebel Roundup at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.
Kyla Evans hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points to top EWU. Julie Piper chipped in with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Cal Poly 77, Idaho 60: Megan Harrison tallied 17 points and Kristina Santiago, Ashlee Burns and Becky Tratter each scored 10 to lead the Mustangs (4-2) past the Vandals (1-4) at the Holiday Beach Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Derisa Taleni topped Idaho with 16 points, while Yinka Olorunnife chipped in with 15 points – including a 9-of-10 effort at the free-throw line – and a game-high nine rebounds.
Redlands 68, Whitworth 62: Courtney Carroll scored 20 points and Meghan Yetman and Mackenzie Smith each finished with double-doubles to guide the Bulldogs (3-1) to a win over the Pirates (3-3) in Redlands, Calif.
Whitworth’s Leah Pomante led all scorers with 23 points. Cassie Pilkinston added 13 points and a team-high nine boards.
Yetman had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Smith tallied 10 points and a game-high 12 boards for Redlands.
