No. 2 UConn victorious

Hasheem Thabeet had 16 points and 12 rebounds and No. 2 Connecticut routed Bryant 88-58 at Hartford, Conn., giving coach Jim Calhoun his 780th career win.

The victory moves Calhoun into a tie with Lou Henson and Lute Olson for eighth on the all-time list.

Thabeet led five Huskies in double figures. Craig Austrie scored 15, A.J. Price and Jeff Adrien each had 14, and Jerome Dyson added 11 for UConn (6-0).

Cecil Gresham, who is from the Hartford suburb of Bloomfield, scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half for Bryant (1-3), which is playing its first year in Division I. He was 6 of 9 from 3-point range.

The Huskies closed the first half with a 23-8 run and led 45-28 at intermission.

(13) UCLA 89, Florida International 54: At Los Angeles, freshman guard Jrue Holiday scored 20 points to lead the Bruins (4-1) to a rout of the Golden Panthers (3-4).

Holiday made all eight of his field-goal attempts and 3 of 4 free throws.

Senior point guard Darren Collison added 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds for UCLA.

Dayton 89, (15) Marquette 75: At Hoffman Estates, Ill., Rob Lowery scored a career-high 21 points and the Flyers (6-0) used their depth and quickness to beat the Golden Eagles (5-1) in the final of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

Marquette got a career-high 28 points from Wesley Matthews and 19 points from Dominic James.

(16) Xavier 60, Miami (Ohio) 53: At Cincinnati, Derrick Brown scored a career-high 23 points and the Musketeers (6-0) overcame cold shooting and the loss of another point guard to stay unbeaten.

Kenny Hayes scored 19 points for the RedHawks (2-3), who have played nationally ranked teams in three of their first five games.

(20) Villanova 78, Rhode Island 65: At Philadelphia, Dante Cunningham had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and the Wildcats (6-0) broke open a close game in the second half to beat the Rams (5-2) in the championship game of the Philly Classic.

Jimmy Baron scored 23 points for Rhode Island.

(22) Miami 79, Stetson 65: At Coral Gables, Fla., Cyrus McGowan scored 14 points to lead the Hurricanes (4-1) to the win over the Hatters (2-3).

Dwayne Collins and Jack McClinton had 12 points apiece for Miami. James Dews finished with 10. McClinton also had six assists.

(25) Wisconsin 67, Wis.-Milwaukee 46: At Madison, Wis., Trevon Hughes scored 16 points and Joe Krabbenhoft added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Badgers (5-1) to a victory over the Panthers (3-4).

Wisconsin-Milwaukee was without senior guard Ricky Franklin, who was suspended for the game after he was arrested early Thursday morning and accused of driving while intoxicated.
