Lobbestael out for the season

The news concerning Marshall Lobbestael was even worse than imagined.

The MRI exam on the Washington State quarterback’s left knee Sunday showed a torn ACL and MCL, meaning the redshirt freshman is done for the season. His recovery time is expected to take nine months.

Lobbestael’s injury was suffered on the second play of the fourth quarter in WSU’s 66-13 defeat at Oregon State. In four games this season, Lobbestael was 53 of 103 for 571 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Cougars hope to have junior QB Kevin Lopina back this week against USC. He’s missed three games with a back injury. Other than Lopina, WSU has two healthy quarterbacks – redshirt freshman Dan Wagner, who finished the Oregon State game, and true freshman J.T. Levenseller, who the Cougars were hoping to redshirt.

Hasselbeck out for Tampa Bay

The Seattle Seahawks will be without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for at least one more game because a bulging disk in his back is causing problems with his knee.

Coach Mike Holmgren said Hasselbeck will not play Sunday night when the Seahawks are at Tampa Bay. Hasselbeck sat out Sunday’s loss to Green Bay.

Holmgren says Hasselbeck saw a specialist in Los Angeles, who determined the disk problem in his back was causing the quarterback weakness in his right knee.

Big Brown’s race career over

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown’s racing career is over after injuring his right front foot during a workout at Aqueduct on Monday.

Michael Iavarone, of IEAH Stables, co-owners of Big Brown, said the 3-year-old colt tore a 3-inch piece of flesh off the foot after it collided with his right rear foot while working over the turf course at Aqueduct with stablemate Kip Deville.

“This was a complete fluke,” Iavarone said. “He hadn’t had issues with his feet for a while and to have him come up just like this was a shock to all of us.”

Iavarone said the injury would take around two months to heal, making it impossible for Big Brown to run in The Breeders’ Cup Classic on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita.
