Spread offense spreads out
FORT WORTH, Texas – The great thing about this era of high-powered offenses is that they’re not contained just in one conference.
Teams throughout the country that have adopted pass-oriented offenses such as the spread continued to put up video game-like numbers this past weekend. With more recruits developing under these schemes, the skill and precision of these offenses should keep improving.
To get an idea of how amazing this era is, look at No. 22 Tulsa’s 77-35 win over Texas-El Paso, in which the teams combined for 50 first downs and 1,129 total yards.
“We expect to score as many as we need to score to win the ball game,” said Tulsa quarterback David Johnson, who threw for 434 yards and five touchdowns. “Our expectation on offense is to score every time we have the ball. As long as we do not stop ourselves, that is a possibility. Tonight we were able to get the run going and the pass going, and I thought we were able to keep them off-balance.”
UTEP coach Mike Price was equally impressed.
“Their offense is one of the best offenses (my teams) have ever played against,” he said. “They just do things right and make it look easy.”
