Jazz’ Williams will miss opener

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz will be opening the regular season without their top player.

Point guard Deron Williams is out for at least two weeks with a sprained ankle, the Jazz said Monday, two days after Williams was injured in a preseason game at Chicago.

Results from an MRI exam done Monday morning showed no damage to the bone and tendons around the ankle, but the second-degree sprain will keep Williams out of the lineup for a minimum of two weeks, the Jazz said. That would include the first two games of the regular season, which starts Oct. 29 when the Jazz host Denver.

Utah is likely to be extra cautious with the team’s young leader, who averaged almost 19 points and 10.5 assists last season and has led the Jazz to the playoffs in two of his three years in the NBA.
