Summit road closing on Mount Spokane

Today is the last chance to drive to the summit of Mount Spokane, that is, if an unusual weather event hasn’t already closed the road.

The summit road was reopened Oct. 4 after the completion of construction that closed the lower park access road for the summer.

Summit road gates will be locked for the season tonight at dusk.

OUTSTANDING

Mellow yellow larch

The golden hues of Western larch are peaking this week in the mountains of North Idaho and northeastern Washington.

Unlike evergreens, the larch has feathery green needles that turn yellow and drop off in late fall, leaving the tree a naked skeleton through winter.

Two top ways to appreciate the change of colors:

Drive to Sherman Pass west of Kettle Falls or Lookout Pass east of Wallace.

Dayhike to the summit of Abercrombie Mountain near Ione and gasp for more than one reason.
