Pirates win soccer opener
Whitney Ramsey, a senior from North Central, had a goal and an assist, and freshman keeper Callie Bergstrom from Mt. Spokane made three saves to earn a shutout as Whitworth opened its women’s soccer season with a 2-0 win over Chapman in Tacoma on Monday.
Volleyball
Idaho outside hitters Haley Larsen and Sarah Conwell were selected to the all-tournament team at the Blue Raider Bash at Middle Tennessee State after helping the Vandals to a 2-1 record.
Larsen, who had 48 kills and 40 digs in the three matches and 10 service aces, also was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week.
•Whitworth freshman outside hitter Kaimi Rocha, who was named most valuable player of the NYU Labor Day Invite, was named Northwest Conference player of the week. She averaged 3.3 kills per game and 1.9 digs per game as Whitworth went undefeated in the tournament.
Softball
Champion Pumpers of Coeur d’Alene finished second in the 50 AA Division at the Amateur Softball Association Men’s Senior Slow Pitch West National Tournament in Spokane that ended Sunday.
Pumpers lost 16-1 to Dust-Tex 55 from Mandan, N.D., in the national championship game.
Four Spokane teams also were in the AA Division, with Illinois Bar & Grill and Quality Life both going 2-2. Bedard/Clark and Jordan Hatfield were winless.
In the AAA Division, a second Dust-Tex team beat KT Hayloft Saloon of Lolo, Mont., twice to win the title, capping it with a 26-14 victory. Shawn Montee of Coeur d’Alene was winless in the division.
