Conrad, Donaghy spark Spokane
KENNEWICK – The Spokane Chiefs jumped out to an early three-goal lead Saturday and hung on to beat the host Tri-City Americans 6-4 in the Red Lion Hotels preseason major junior hockey tournament at the Toyota Center.
David Conrad and Dustin Donaghy each scored a pair of goals for the Chiefs (3-2 in the preseason), who also got goals from T.C. Cratsenberg and Stefan Ulmer. Ulmer had a pair of assists to go with his goal.
Trailing 3-1 after the opening period, the Americans (3-2) got a power-play goal from Justin Feser to close to within 3-2 heading into the final period. But Spokane scored the first two goals of the period and rendered late scores by Tri-City’s Feser and Jason Reese meaningless.
The Chiefs’ Dustin Tokarski played all 60 minutes in goal and turned back 38 shots.
Spokane will face the Kelowna Rockets in another exhibition at the Eagles Ice-A-Rena on Friday. The Chiefs open their regular Western Hockey League season on Sept. 18 against the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, British Columbia.
