Wisconsin survives big test
No. 10 Badgers edge No. 21 Fresno State
P.J. Hill and Wisconsin spoiled the biggest game in Bulldog Stadium history.
Hill ran for 112 yards and Allan Evridge threw a touchdown pass before leaving with an injury to help the 10th-ranked Badgers beat No. 21 Fresno State 13-10 on Saturday night in Fresno, Calif.
The much-hyped contest was the physical, tight game that both teams expected. The Badgers ended up on top because they capitalized on key special-teams plays while the Bulldogs didn’t.
Wisconsin (3-0) scored its only points of the second half on a 23-yard field goal by Philip Welch after a fumbled punt by A.J. Jefferson. That proved to be just enough to win because Kevin Goessling missed three field goals, including a 35-yarder in the fourth quarter and a 51-yarder after a blocked punt in the third.
Fresno State (1-1) appeared to have another good chance after Robert Malone’s punt was downed inside the 1 with 1:55 to go. But backup quarterback Dustin Scherer ran for 2 yards on first down and fullback Bill Rentmeester followed with an 8-yard run for a first down that forced Fresno State to use its final timeout. Scherer took three knees to run out the clock.
(6) Missouri 69, Nevada 17: At Columbia, Mo., Chase Daniel threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns and the Tigers (3-0) scored on their first 10 possessions in routing the WolfPack (1-2).
Daniel was 23 for 28 and led Missouri to seven touchdowns and a field goal before exiting in the third quarter.
The Tigers gained 651 total yards and averaged 10 yards per play.
The 69 points tied a team record set against Kansas in 1969, and they’ve scored 173 points in three games.
Nevada lost a second straight game to a Big 12 opponent after falling to Texas Tech a week before.
(22) Utah 58, Utah State 10: At Logan, Utah, Matt Asiata rushed for three touchdowns and Brian Johnson threw for two more as the Utes (3-0) defeated the Aggies (0-3).
After a lackluster second half in their win at Michigan and a sputtering first half last week against UNLV, the Utes were looking for a quality performance from start to finish.
Nebraska 38, New Mexico State 7: At Lincoln, Neb., Joe Ganz threw a touchdown pass, ran for a score and caught a TD pass, and Marlon Lucky helped revive Nebraska’s rushing attack with 103 yards, leading the Cornhuskers (2-0) to a win over the Aggies (0-1).
Ganz became the third player in program history to score three different ways in a game. Johnny Rodgers did it in the 1973 Orange Bowl against Notre Dame and Eric Crouch in 1999 against California.
San Jose State 35, San Diego State 10: At San Jose, Calif., Kyle Reed scored three touchdowns and completed his first 12 passes as the Spartans (2-1) defeated the Aztecs (0-3).
Yonus Davis rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown as San Jose State won at home for the 14th time in 16 games. Reed was 20 of 25 for 178 yards and an interception. David Richmond caught eight passes for 83 yards.
