The matchups

By Terry Bannon Chicago Tribune

Chiefs at Falcons

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Falcons by 6

Records: Chiefs (0-2), Falcons (1-1)

Chiefs: Can they give ball to Larry Johnson enough so he can be happy? Second-year QB Tyler Thigpen tabbed to start over Damon Huard.

Falcons: Rookie QB Matt Ryan is comfortable in his home dome, as evidenced by his big opening day win 2 weeks ago.

Fantasy outlook: It could be day for runners. Chiefs need to give ball to Johnson and Falcons must get it to Michael Turner.

Injury: Chiefs’ veteran CB Patrick Surtain out with shoulder injury.

Raiders at Bills

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Bills by 9 1/2

Records: Raiders (1-1), Bills (2-0)

Raiders: Lane Kiffin is, as they say, week-to-week. Problem is he’s a head coach waiting for Al Davis to decide his fate. Will one more loss do it?

Bills: Impressive start for Buffalo’s defense, but Bills have done it against two banged-up offenses (Seahawks, Jaguars). Bills going for first 3-0 start since ’92.

Fantasy outlook: Raiders rookie Darren McFadden off to good start with 7.0-yard average per carry. Bills’ Trent Edwards has tossed two TD passes and zero interceptions in 55 throws.

Injuries: Raiders RB Justin Fargas is unlikely to play because of groin injury and WR Javon Walker still slowed by hamstring.

Bucs at Bears

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Bears by 3

Records: Bucs (1-1), Bears (1-1)

Bucs: Jon Gruden has named Brian Griese his starter ahead of Jeff Garcia, and now he has to live with it.

Bears: Offense scored only one TD in loss at Carolina, so passing game has to come around. Kyle Orton still working on delivering deep ball.

Fantasy outlook: Neither team throws well, so it’ll be up to Bucs’ Earnest Graham (8.3 yards per carry) and Bears’ Matt Forte (4.7) to provide offense.

Injuries: Bears’ return specialist and WR Devin Hester (ribs) is iffy. … Bucs WR Joey Galloway is expected to miss game with foot injury

Panthers at Vikings

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Vikings by 3

Records: Panthers (2-0), Vikes (0-2)

Panthers: Confident Panthers head north and add No. 1 WR Steve Smith, who returns after two-game suspension for breaking teammate Ken Lucas’ nose in training camp fight.

Vikings: After just two games, Vikings are switching from Tarvaris Jackson to 37-year-old Gus Frerotte. And coach Brad Childress doesn’t see it as temporary move.

Fantasy outlook: Panthers rookie RB Jonathan Stewart getting 5.4 yards per carry, and had two TDs in last week’s win over Bears. Vikings don’t have much besides league-leading rusher Adrian Peterson (263 yards, 5.5 avg).

Injury: Vikings WR Sidney Rice has sprained knee.

Dolphins at Patriots

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Patriots by 12 1/2

Records: Dolphins (0-2), Pats (2-0)

Patriots: Matt Cassel makes second start as Tom Brady’s successor. Conservative attack that beat Jets on road can handle lowly Dolphins at home.

Dolphins: Miami hasn’t generated any offense in losses to Jets and Cardinals, scoring a total of 24 points. Patriots defense hasn’t allowed much of anything, so how will Dolphins score?

Fantasy outlook: TE Anthony Fasano leads Dolphins with eight catches, one for TD. Wes Welker, who leads Pats with 13 catches, had 14 catches, two TDs vs. Dolphins last year.

Injury: Pats RB Laurence Maroney is dealing with shoulder injury.

Bengals at Giants

Time: 10 a.m. TV: CBS

Line: Giants by 13 1/2

Records: Bengals (0-2), Giants (2-0)

Bengals: Marvin Lewis’ program has slipped into trouble, and Bengals are 0-2 for first time in five years. They’ve scored only one TD on offense and fans are already restless.

Giants: Super Bowl champs haven’t faced a tough test yet, winning their first two games by combined score of 57-20 (Redskins, Rams). They won’t get one this week, and they’re off next week. Everything’s on cruise control.

Fantasy outlook: If Bengals get offense going, it will be with QB Carson Palmer, still looking for his first TD pass of season. Eli Manning has thrown three already.

Injury: Bengals TE Ben Utecht may not play because of chest injury.

Texans at Titans

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Titans by 4 1/2

Records: Texans (0-1), Titans (2-0)

Texans: After forced week off because of Hurricane Ike, Texans try to regroup on road. QB Matt Schaub will have to make plays.

Titans: Kerry Collins has been efficient so far in place of Vince Young, and he remains starting QB. Titans are playing with confidence and know how to handle their AFC South rivals – they’ve beaten Texans 6 straight.

Fantasy outlook: Texans’ Andre Johnson had 10 catches, though no TDs, in opening loss to Steelers. Titans rookie Chris Johnson averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

Injuries: Titans CB Nick Harper (ankle) and WR Justin Gage (groin) are both questionable.

Cardinals at Redskins

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Redskins by 3

Records: Cards (2-0), Redskins (1-1)

Cardinals: Going for first 3-0 start since 1974, Cards take step up in competition after beating 49ers and Dolphins.

Redskins: Jason Campbell has yet to throw an interception this season and Redskins showed some guts with come-from-behind victory over Saints.

Fantasy outlook: Anquan Boldin one of several Cards off to fast start with 14 catches, three TDs. Redskins counter with Santana Moss (12 catches, 16.8 average, two TDs).

Injuries: Cards DE Travis LaBoy (ankle) and Redskins DE Jason Taylor (knee) are questionable.

Saints at Broncos

Time: 1:05 p.m. Line: Broncos by 5 1/2

Records: Saints (1-1), Broncos (2-0)

Saints: Drew Brees off to fast start with 4 TD passes. He’ll have to get ball to Reggie Bush in any number of ways to pull this one off.

Broncos: Jay Cutler has embarrassment of riches at WR with Brandon Marshall (league-leading 18 catches in just one game) and rookie Eddie Royal (14 catches, two TDs). Plus, Selvin Young averaging 7.6 yards per carry.

Fantasy outlook: Broncos’ league-leading offense (463.5 yards per game) gets to feast on Saints’ No. 29 defense (403.5).

Injury: Saints CB Aaron Glenn has ankle injury.

Lions at 49ers

Time: 1:05 p.m. Line: 49ers by 5

Records: Lions (0-2), 49ers (1-1)

Lions: It isn’t pretty in Detroit – again. Lions have a 3-14 road record under coach Rod Marinelli and have allowed 82 points in their first two games.

49ers: Pair of former Lions employees – QB J.T. O’Sullivan and offensive coordinator Mike Martz – get chance to show up their old organization.

Fantasy outlook: Lions WR Calvin Johnson goes for third straight 100-yard game. 49ers WR Bryant Johnson goes for fourth straight game vs. Lions with at least four catches.

Injury: Lions S Gerald Alexander (concussion).

Browns at Ravens

Time: 1:15 p.m. Line: Ravens by 3

Records: Browns (0-2), Ravens (1-0)

Browns: Offense is issue. WR Braylon Edwards has dropped five passes, equaling number of catches.

Ravens: After forced week off because of Hurricane Ike, Ravens are rested. Their defense was dominant in opener, but it was against Bengals.

Fantasy outlook: Ex-Raven Jamal Lewis averaging just 3.1 yards per carry, but Ravens have gone NFL-best 20 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher.

Injury: Browns lost DE Robaire Smith for season to torn Achilles tendon.

Jaguars at Colts

Time: 1:15 p.m. Line: Colts by 4 1/2

Records: Jaguars (0-2), Colts (1-1)

Jaguars: Injuries along offensive line have limited Jaguars’ attack, putting pressure on good defense.

Colts: Colts have had offensive line problems but they’ve adjusted better.

Fantasy outlook: Matt Jones leads Jaguars with 11 catches, but no TDs. Colts’ Reggie Wayne off to big start with 15 catches, 11.9-yard average, two TDs.

Injury: Big blow for Colts: Pro Bowl S Bob Sanders is out 4-6 weeks with high ankle sprain.

Steelers at Eagles

Time: 1:15 p.m. TV: CBS.

Line: Eagles by 3

Records: Steelers (2-0), Eagles (1-1)

Steelers: Steelers can run ball and Ben Roethlisberger leads NFL in passing, sore shoulder and all.

Eagles: Have to bounce back from emotional road loss at archrival Dallas as they prepare to meet cross-state rivals. They’ll need big day from RB Brian Westbrook.

Fantasy outlook: Steelers’ Hines Ward has 11 catches, and is tied for NFL lead with three TD receptions. Eagles rookie DeSean Jackson has started his career with two 100-yard receiving games.

Injury: Eagles G Shawn Andrews is questionable with back spasms.

Cowboys at Packers

Time: 5:15 p.m. TV: NBC.

Line: Cowboys by 3

Records: Cowboys (2-0), Packers (2-0)

Packers: Aaron Rodgers faces his first test of year outside NFC North. He’s made it look easy so far with four TD passes and zero interceptions.

Fantasy outlook: Packers’ Greg Jennings has 11 catches for league-high 258 yards (23.5 avg.)

Injuries: Cowboys S Roy Williams is out with broken forearm. … Packers S Atari Bigby (hamstring) is unlikely to play.
