Loggers chip away at Whits

In a showdown of NCAA Division III top 10 women’s soccer teams Saturday, No. 5 Puget Sound scored 7 minutes into the match and rolled to a 3-1 Northwest Conference victory over host Whitworth.

Janece Levien, the NWC offensive player of the year in 2007, scored early on and Mikaela Freeman added another goal just before half for the Loggers (5-1, 3-0 NWC).

No. 9 Whitworth (5-2, 1-2) scored on Mahyo Seyedali’s goal in the 85th minute.

•Visiting Lane Community College used a four-goal flurry in roughly a 23-minute span to rout Spokane 4-0 at SFCC. Lane scored late in the first half and added three goals early in the second, two by Kayla Stewart.

•North Idaho College had more shots on goal than Rocky Mountain (14-5), but the Rivals scored late in regulation to snag a 1-0 win over the Cardinals in Salt Lake City.

Men’s soccer

Zac Semango scored 40 seconds into the second overtime to spark visiting Puget Sound to a 1-0 Northwest Conference upset of No. 8 Whitworth (6-1-1, 2-1). UPS improved to 3-3-1, 1-0-1.

Whitworth had 16 total shots compared to UPS’s 11.

•Gustavo Bermudez and Joel Doenas scored first-half goals to carry Chemeketa to a 2-1 win over host Spokane at SFCC. Travis Green scored CCS’s lone goal in the 60th minute.

Volleyball

Idaho earned its first WAC victory this season and senior Haley Larsen became the school’s all-time kill leader as the Vandals outlasted Boise State 25-13, 23-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-9 at Memorial Gym.

Larsen finished with 31 kills. She has 1,538 career kills and moved past Kelly Gibbons (1981-84), who had 1,524. The Vandals improved to 8-6, 1-2 WAC. BSU dropped to 4-9, 1-2.

•Emily Rooney had six kills and Kelly Hyder had 15 digs, but Washington State was swept by host Arizona State 25-10, 25-14, 25-18 in Tempe, Ariz.

WSU’s Brittany Johnson, a senior from Phoenix, had three kills, giving her more than 1,000 in her career. She’s the 10th player in school history to reach the milestone.

WSU dropped to 7-6, 0-2 in the Pac-10. ASU is 10-5, 1-1.

•Hayley Hills’ 28 kills helped Eastern Washington to a 25-22, 27-29, 26-24, 25-13 Big Sky Conference victory over visiting Montana. Chenoa Coviare added 13 kills, Ashley Hamilton had 47 assists and Mandy Daniels contributed 31 digs for the Eagles (6-7, 3-1), who hit .301.

The Grizzlies (6-8, 2-2) were led by Amy Roberts’ 15 kills.

•Whitworth had 28 hitting errors while falling 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 to Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. The Pirates (8-8, 1-3 NWC) never led in the first and third sets. They were ahead briefly in the second game, 10-8, before the Boxers (4-8, 3-1) moved back in front. Whitworth senior Holly Tomlin and freshman Kaimi Rocha each had five kills.

Cross country

The Washington State University men’s team, paced by senior Drew Polley’s 15th-place finish, took sixth at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. Polley timed 24 minutes, 43 seconds on the 8,000-meter course at Les Bolstad Golf Course. WSU junior Sam Ahlbeck timed 25:14 to take 37th.
