AppleSox score in 9th to down RiverHawks
The East Division-leading Wenatchee AppleSox warmed up for the West Coast League baseball playoffs with a 4-1 victory over the Spokane RiverHawks at Avista Stadium Friday night, scoring three runs in the ninth inning.
Wenatchee (32-14) will face the second-place Kelowna Falcons in the divisional playoffs next week.
Spokane (19-27), with games remaining today and Sunday against the AppleSox at Avista, is headed for a third-place finish.
A single, walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for the AppleSox with one out in the ninth against starter Tyler Olson.
Ryan Richardson came on in relief and gave up a run-scoring single to Ronnie Shaeffer for a 2-1 Wenatchee lead.
A fielder’s choice with an error on the play and another hit resulted in two more runs.
The RiverHawks’ lone run came in the third inning to tie the game.
Connor Moore doubled with one out, went to third on a ground out and scored on an infield error.
Olson gave up six hits, three walks and three earned runs. He struck out six. Cody Reeves had two hits for Spokane.
Golf
Chessey Thomas, 17, of Spokane shot a 54-hole score of 7-over-par 223 to win medalist honors at the Scissortail Junior Championship, an American Junior Golf Association tournament featuring top junior golfers from around the country that concluded Thursday at the Golf Club of Oklahoma in Tulsa, Okla.
Her win in Tulsa comes after shooting a 72-hole score of 10-over par 298 to place 20th at the 34th Junior PGA Championship, held July 28-31 at the TPC at River’s Bend Golf Course in Maineville, Ohio.
Men’s soccer
Northwest Conference coaches made Whitworth their unanimous pick to win the conference championship. The Pirates have won the last two titles.
Cross country
The Gonzaga University men are picked to finish fifth and women’s team sixth by West Coast Conference coaches in their preseason poll. Portland is picked to win both league championships.
