EWU announces basketball schedule

Eastern Washington University’s 2009-10 men’s basketball schedule includes non-conference games with Gonzaga and Washington State, coach Kirk Earlywine announced Tuesday.

The Eagles, 12-18 last season, return five lettermen from last year’s team that went 6-10 in the Big Sky Conference.

EWU plays at WSU on Nov. 16 and at GU on Dec. 28. The Eagles open the season Nov. 1 at home against Saint Martin’s. Eastern’s conference opener is Dec. 5 at Portland State.

Golf

Coeur d’Alene’s Alex Pounds tied for third at the 55th PNGA Junior Boys Amateur Championship at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow.

Pounds shot a second-round 1-under-par 71 to finish at 143, five shots behind medalist Zach Wanderschneid of Goldendale, Wash. Clarkston’s Michael Baldeck finished another shot back.

•Moscow’s Chris Williams tied for sixth in U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying at the Prospector Course at Suncadia Resort in Roslyn, Wash.

Williams shot an even-par 72 in the second round to finish four shots behind three golfers who qualified for the Men’s Amateur Championship in Tulsa, Okla.

•Spokane’s Chessey Thomas is tied for fourth among girls after one round of the American Junior Golf Association’s tournament at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club.

Thomas shot a 3-over 75 and trails Seo Hee Moon of Mukilteo, Wash., by five shots.

For boys, Spokane’s Dylan Maine shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for sixth, four shots behind Lorens Chan of Honolulu.

Volleyball

Eastern Washington University was selected second in the Big Sky Conference coaches’ preseason poll.

EWU, last year’s regular-season champion, received two first-place votes and 58 points. Portland State was the top choice, with seven first-place votes and 63 points.

•Western Athletic Conference coaches selected Idaho senior middle blocker Anna McKinney to their preseason all-conference team.

Football

University of Idaho senior guard Mike Iupati has been chosen for the Outland Trophy Watch List, an award given to the best interior lineman in the country.

Women’s soccer

Northwest Conference coaches selected Whitworth to place second in their preseason poll.

The Pirates, 15-4-1 last season, received 69 points. Defending champion Puget Sound picked up all nine first-place votes and 90 points.
