Extension San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers signed a six-year contract extension with the Chargers worth $93 million, with $38 million guaranteed. Rivers is coming off his best pro season, when he set a team record for touchdown passes with a league-high 34.

Out Arizona Cardinals second-round draft pick Cody Brown is out for the season with a dislocated left wrist. The linebacker from Connecticut was injured in the Cardinals’ 17-6 preseason loss to San Diego on Saturday.

Suspended South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier suspended starting defensive end Clifton Geathers following his Sunday morning arrest by police for fighting outside a nightclub in Columbia, S.C. Geathers was charged with public drunkenness, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Traded The Miami Dolphins traded offensive linemen Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe to the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed 2010 draft choice. Ndukwe started 15 games at right guard for Miami last season. Alleman made four starts last year.

Died One of the owners of the Cincinnati Reds from their Big Red Machine days has died. William J. Williams Sr. died Sunday night at age 93. He was part of a small group that bought the team in 1966 and celebrated back-to-back World Series championships in 1975-76. His family sold controlling interest in the team in 1985.

Moves The Toronto Blue Jays have activated closer Scott Downs and put third baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day disabled list. Downs had been out with an injury to his big left toe and Encarnacion has a strained left hamstring.

Surgery Carolina Panthers starting free safety Charles Godfrey underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his right hand, two days after he was injured in an exhibition loss to Miami. Coach John Fox wouldn’t say how long Godfrey will be out.

Arrested The arrest of Ravens rookie and Iraq war veteran Tony Fein at a restaurant in the Inner Harbor tourist district in Baltimore was the result of police profiling, the linebacker’s agent said. Fein was charged Sunday with the misdemeanor assault of an officer who confronted him after a security guard thought he saw Fein pass a handgun to a friend. “Tony’s never owned a weapon in his life,” agent Milton Dee Hobbs said. “That weapon was a cell phone.”

Doping Czech tennis player Ivo Minar tested positive for a banned substance after a Davis Cup match. Czech Tennis Association president Ivo Kaderka said that the sample was taken after a Davis Cup quarterfinal victory over Argentina on July 10-12.
