Signed The Denver Broncos bolstered their depth at quarterback Wednesday by signing free agent Ingle Martin. Backup quarterback Chris Simms suffered a high ankle sprain when Seahawks pass rusher Nick Reed fell on his left ankle during the third quarter of Saturday’s 27-13 loss at Seattle, and the Broncos have not said how long Simms is expected to be sidelined.
Cleared Tennessee freshman tailback Bryce Brown will not be punished as the result of an NCAA investigation into his eligibility. The NCAA was reviewing whether money was improperly raised for Brown to visit colleges during his sophomore year of high school. Head coach Lane Kiffin says he talked with the NCAA and Brown wrote a letter to the organ- ization pleading his case.
Died A junior college basketball player who recently signed with Grambling State has died after he became ill at a preseason practice more than a week ago. Grambling said in a statement that 21-year-old Henry White became ill Aug. 14 after conditioning. The statement says Grambling is investigating what may have contributed to White’s death. White was a prep standout at Washington High in Milwaukee.
Retired New York Islanders center Mike Sillinger, who played for a record 12 teams during 17 seasons in the NHL, is retiring because of an injured left hip.The 38-year-old forward played in only seven games last season and had season-ending hip resurfacing surgery in January. Sillinger said he’d like to stay in hockey but downplayed the notion that he might go into coaching right away.
Agreed Indiana head football coach Bill Lynch wanted to expand his program’s recruiting base. The cash and a chance to play at an NFL stadium helped, too. The Hoosiers announced that they’ve agreed to move next season’s home game against Penn State to FedExField, home of the Washington Redskins, for $3 million. The Hoosiers will be required to sell 7,000 tickets in a stadium that seats more than 91,000. It’s not the first time Indiana and Penn State have played in an NFL stadium. The Nittany Lions beat the Hoosiers 27-24 at the now-demolished RCA Dome in Indianapolis in October 2000, and are 12-0 in the series.
