World in brief: Graduation bomber kills 22, shakes troubled Somalia

From Wire Reports

Mogadishu, Somalia – A suicide bomber disguised as a woman attacked a graduation ceremony in Somalia on Thursday, turning a rare reason to celebrate into carnage that killed at least 22 people – including medical students, doctors and three government ministers.

The blast was blamed on Islamic militants who have shown a rising ability to carry out sophisticated large-scale bombings against high-profile targets – and highlighted the inability of Somalia’s weak government to protect even the small section of the capital it controls.

Diver, stung by tiny jellyfish, rushed to intensive care

Sydney, Australia – A man who dove face-first into an extremely venomous, peanut-sized jellyfish in the waters off northeast Australia was flown to a hospital intensive care unit, officials said today.

The 29-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was on a yacht Thursday near South Molle Island, off northeast Queensland state. As a precaution, he was wearing a full-length “stinger suit,” a lightweight version of a wetsuit that covers everything but the face, feet and hands and helps protect against venomous jellyfish that are common in northern Australia’s waters during the Southern Hemisphere summer.

But when he dove into the water, he was immediately stung in the face by a potentially lethal Irukandji jellyfish.

Google Street View allows users to take tour of Pompeii

Rome – Internet users can now walk the streets of Pompeii without dusting up their shoes with the volcanic ash that buried the Roman city nearly 2,000 ago.

Italy’s Culture Ministry said Thursday it had worked with Google to add to the Street View application images of the avenues, villas, temples and theaters of the ancient town.

The application allows Internet users to view panoramic street-level pictures of more than 100 cities around the world.
