CV Bears break away

Scott Simon had 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Jake Estey had 13 points as the Central Valley Bears (1-0) broke away early against the Chiawana Riverhawks to earn a 69-53 non-league boys basketball win Friday in Pasco.

The Bears led 36-10 at the half with a balanced attack, out-rebounding the Riverhawks 37-23 and shooting 6 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Lake City 54, North Central 49: T.J. Philp scored 14 points to lead three players in double figures and added seven boards for the Timberwolves (4-0), who held off a fourth-quarter comeback by the visiting Indians (0-2) to remain unbeaten.

Moscow 54, La Grande 52: The Bears (3-0) finished a two-game road trip to Oregon by beating the Tigers after trailing by 16 in the second half in La Grande, Ore. With Mac Stannard held to four points, Jason Fritz poured in 32 for the Bears.

Timberlake 36, Coeur d’Alene Charter 33: Derek Tymesen scored a game-high 17 points, with his last two coming at the free-throw line with one second remaining to seal the win for the Tigers (2-1) against the Panthers (0-1) in Spirit Lake.

Inchelium 57, Curlew 33: The Hornets (2-0) broke loose in the second quarter with 18 points against the Cougars (0-2) in Curlew. Brandon Kohler had 20 points and Tony Louie added 17 for the Hornets.

Riverside Christian 48, St. George’s 42: The Crusaders collected 19 offensive rebounds against the Dragons (1-1), leading to multiple second-chance opportunities that proved to be the difference in Yakima. Jordan Dickson had 14 points for the Dragons.

Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 56, Reardan 52: Jake Erickson tossed in 16 points and Jordan Sherwood scored 14 to lead the Hawks to a victory over the visiting Indians. Grant Schultz paced Reardan with 15 points.

Newport 59, Medical Lake 45: Clint Hunt registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds and the Grizzlies (2-0) outscored the Cardinals (1-1) 18-4 in the fourth quarter in Newport.

Chewelah 64, Bonners Ferry 56: Josh Christian scored six of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, going 4 of 4 from the free- throw line to help lead the Cougars (2-0) over the Badgers (2-1) in Chewelah.

Republic 49, Kettle Falls 17: It was a team effort for the Tigers (2-0) against the visiting Bulldogs (0-3) as the only player to finish in double figures was Justin Wilson with 12. Nine players notched points for the Tigers.

Valley Christian 51, Sprague-Harrington 47: Tyler Tipke led all scorers with 21 points and Dan Seeman scored 10 points to go with eight assists and seven steals for the Panthers (1-1) in the win against the visiting Falcons (1-2).

St. John-Endicott 55, Dayton 54: The Bulldogs attempted a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was off the mark and the host Eagles (2-1) held on to pick up the win, led by 12 points from freshman Kaleb Simon. The Eagles had three players in double figures.

Garfield-Palouse 60, Potlatch 51: Gavin Burt scored 19 points to go with eight steals as the Vikings (1-0) shook off some early rust in their first game of the season to beat the Loggers in Palouse.

Wilbur-Creston 50, Columbia 11: Austin Snavely led the Wildcats (2-0) with 14 points in beating the Lions (0-3) in Hunters. The Wildcats asserted themselves early, scoring 18 first-quarter points while holding the Lions scoreless in the opening frame.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 56, Moses Lake Christian 49: Derek Isaak scored 22 points and Cody Dillon added 13 for the Warriors (2-0), who overcame sloppy play and an off night from the field to beat the visiting Lions.

LaCrosse-Washtucna 50, Touchet 40: The visiting Tigercats (1-0) were led by the combined efforts of brothers Jeff and Jed Zimmer, who combined for 40 of their team’s points in beating the Indians.

Northwest Christian 56, Freeman 25: The Crusaders (1-1) led 15-2 after one quarter and outscored the Scotties (1-2) 31-12 in the second half in Colbert.

Rosalia vs. Cusick: The game between the Spartans and Panthers was postponed and will be made up Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. in Cusick.

Silver Valley Tournament

Kellogg 65, Wallace 34: The Wildcats (2-1) outscored the Miners (1-1) 28-10 in the second quarter to take a 24-point lead by the half and rolled to a win in the championship game of the Silver Valley Tournament in Wallace. J.J. Bebout led the Wildcats with 18 points.

Wrestling

Deer Park Invite: Nathan Brown from North Central made an impressive end to his day, beating defending two-time state champion Drew Acorn of Deer Park in a 6-3 decision to take first place at the 125-pound weight class. The host Stags took first place as a team with five wrestlers taking first giving them 249 points, beating Riverside (208) for the team title.

Jake Konzal (103) and Shawn Burton (285) led Deer Park with pins in each of their final matches. Konzal felled Chelan’s Eric Garcia in 4:50 after earning pins in his previous two matches. Burton finished his match with Will Peters of Chewelah in 3:40.

Caleb Erb, Tyler McLean and Jacob Trotter all took first place for Mead, which finished third with 145.5 points. Trotter, at 215 pounds, beat Lakeside’s Dallas Watkens with a pin fall in the final round at 5:15.

Also finishing with multiple champions was East Valley, as Sean Biltoft beat Lakeside’s Josh Lauderdale 5-1 in the 135-pound championship match and Aaron Brown Held off Justin Hodge of Riverside, 7-2 in the 140-pound bracket.
