Snowy forecast takes us into next week
A partly sunny Friday will give way to a forecast of snow through next week, when we finally should escape temperatures in the single digits and teens.
Two approaching weather systems will converge, bringing snow to the Inland Northwest, said meteorologist Ron Miller with the National Weather Service in Spokane.
“The tricky part of the forecast is where do these (systems) meet and who gets the snow from it,” Miller said.
A surge of cold from the north and moisture from the south-southwest will likely keep most of the snow this weekend to the areas south of Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, he said. Winter storm watches have been issued for Saturday morning through Sunday night on the Palouse, Lewiston area, Camas Prairie, and Idaho Panhandle mountains south of Interstate 90. Spokane and Coeur d’Alene could see some snow, Miller said, but likely just a light dusting.
He said the better potential for precipitation in our area is early next week. Spokane and Coeur d’Alene could see heavy snow Monday night through Tuesday night.
“The best news I can give … (there’s) a good chance of seeing snow in the early part of next week but the temperatures will moderate,” Miller said, describing that highs could reach about freezing, allowing for a rain-snow mix later in the week.
The timing is quite similar to last year’s big snow storm, which hit in mid-December after a fairly snow-free November and early December, Miller said.
