Vijil returns to Spokane Shock

Arena football: Spokane Shock career leading receiver Raul Vijil will try his hand with the upgraded version of the arena football team.

Vijil, a standout at Eastern Washington University, holds several franchise records including receiving yards (3,869), receptions (339), touchdown receptions (98) and all-purpose yards (6,846).

In each of the last three seasons, Vijil has been selected as a first-team all-af2 receiver.

The Shock are now part of the Arena Football One League, a combination of teams from the af2 and the recently folded Arena Football League.

Golf: Robert Hustrulid, a Spokane physician and former University of Minnesota golf team member, says golfers of all calibers can learn something from the teaching techniques of Les Bolstad, the late UM coach.

Hustrulid said he’s going to prove it on Sunday, 12:30 p.m., at Auntie’s Bookstore, when he presents a free golf lesson excerpted from his new book, “Swing Les: Enjoy Your Golf Game More.”

“Les had a truly unique way of teaching golf that would benefit so many people, but he never wrote it down in a book,” Hustrulid said. “So I did.”

The book and accompanying DVD sell for $19.95 with all the profits going to The First Tee Foundation for helping underprivileged youth through golf, Hustrulid said.

Overbay to play in Shrine Game

College football: Eastern Washington University senior tight end Nathan Overbay has been selected to play in the 85th annual East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 23 in Orlando, Fla.

Overbay is the second Eastern player to play in the East-West Game. Michael Roos, now with the Tennessee Titans, played in 2005 following his senior season in 2004.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Overbay caught 51 passes for 588 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior to earn first-team All-Big Sky Conference honors. He is the nephew of Toronto Blue Jays baseball player Lyle Overbay.

In Orlando, the quarterbacks on Overbay’s West squad are BYU’s Max Hall and Oklahoma State’s Zak Robinson. Washington State senior center Kenny Alfred is also on the West roster.
