CCS hall will induct 10 women’s teams

Ten women’s teams in three sports – cross country, track and volleyball – from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s will be inducted into the Community Colleges of Spokane Athletics Hall of Fame March 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Red Lion River Inn.

Dale Kennedy coached the cross country and track teams that will be honored during the ceremony. Mary Jo Tracy coached the volleyball teams.

Cross country teams from 1976-77, ’77-78, ’78-79 and ’79-80 all won conference championships. The ’78-79 team, led by individual champion Kelly Warren, compiled the second-lowest winning point total possible, 16.

The ’77-78 team included conference champion Joan Corbin and the ’79-80 team was led by individual winner Joanne Lahti.

Kennedy’s track teams from 1977-78, ’78-79 and ’79-80 that will be honored also won NWAACC titles.

Volleyball teams to be inducted won back-to-back NWAACC championships in 1980-81 and ’81-82.

Any athlete who was on one of the teams but hasn’t been contacted by the school is asked to get in touch with Zacher.

Auto racing

Joe and Walt Doellefeld, promoters of Stateline Stadium & Speedway in Post Falls, received the 33rd Auto Racing Promoter of the Year award from Racing Promotion Monthly, a newsletter for auto racing promoters, Monday in Lake Mary, Fla.

The Doellefeld brothers, who received the industry’s most prestigious award on their fifth nomination, also were honored as Regional Auto Racing Promoters of the Year during ceremonies at the annual RPM Workshops Series.

College scene

Basketball players from Spokane-area high schools are the Community Colleges of Spokane scholar-athletes of the month for January.

Kami Clark, a sophomore from Mead who leads the Sasquatch in region play with a 13.5 scoring average, is the female winner. She averages three steals a game and is shooting 45 percent from the field. Clark has a 3.5 grade-point average.

Luke Clift, a freshman guard from Central Valley called by the Sasquatch “one of the best lockdown defenders in the league,” is the male choice. He has a 3.72 GPA.

•Track and field athlete Shene Davis and tennis player Art Karas are the Eastern Washington athletics department scholar-athlete winners for January.

Davis is a sophomore standout in the 60-meter dash and triple jump. She has a 3.58 GPA. Karas, a senior who has school records in career wins (46) and season wins (18), has a 3.29 GPA.

Nick Atwood, a Montana State junior from East Valley, earned his second Big Sky Conference men’s track athlete of the week award this season by winning the 3,000 meters in the Mountain States Invite indoor meet in 8 minutes, 9.90 seconds, just 3 seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Lucas Ashe, a sophomore on the Northwest University men’s basketball team from Mead, had a game-high 21 points and five rebounds in a recent 73-57 loss to College of Idaho.

Ashe is fourth in the Cascade Conference in 3-pointers with 53 in 17 games, and sixth in 3-point shooting at 42.1 percent.

Cross country

Ashley Barnes of Moscow, a senior who helped the Bears to a district title and eighth-place finish in the Idaho 4A state meet, has signed a letter of intent with Lewis-Clark State, Warriors coach Mike Collins announced.

Barnes finished ninth in the district meet and 63rd at state.

Soccer

Ten athletes, five from California and three from Arizona, have signed national letters of intent with Washington State, Cougars coach Matt Potter announced.

The group includes Emma Levy, a midfielder/fullback from Sammamish, Wash. She is a three-time All-KingCo selection and the league’s offensive MVP her junior and senior seasons.

Others are midfielder Caitlin Bresnahan, Cincinnati; goalkeeper Ariana Byrd, Phoenix; fullback Mariah Cameron, Castro Valley, Calif.; centerback Megan Garrity, Fountain Valley, Calif.; and midfielder/fullback Kayla Johnson, Phoenix.

Also, midfielder Mel Johnston, Mesa, Ariz.; midfielder Ashley Loughmiller, Pleasanton, Calif.; midfielder Shannon McFadden, Ventura, Calif.; and forward Brandi Vega, Carson City, Nev.

Track and field

A mandatory rules clinic for North Idaho high school track coaches will be held Tuesday at Post Falls High School beginning at 7 p.m.

•Anyone interested in becoming a track and field official is asked to attend a USAT&F Officials Certification Clinic on Feb. 22 at Eastern Washington University.

The class in the physical education classrooms in the fieldhouse building south of the track will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $20 and includes lunch. Attendees will become a certified official. Anyone just wanting to learn about becoming a volunteer and assisting at local meets can also attend. Cost of lunch is $5.
