Cougars swarm Sooners in 8th
Matt Argyropoulos and Derek Jones singled in two runs apiece during the decisive seven-run eighth inning and the Washington State Cougars (1-3) claimed a 9-2 non-conference baseball victory over the 16th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (5-2) in the home opener at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Argyropoulos finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs and Jones was 3 for 4 and drove in three runs to back a solid pitching effort from Matt Way, Jeremy Johnson and Michael Ratigan.
•Ryan Wiegand and Royce Bolinger drove in two runs apiece and the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-1) scored four runs in the final two innings to earn a 7-3 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2-2) at the Phoenix College Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
A.J. Proszek earned the victory for Gonzaga with 22/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Matt Fields.
Track and field
In a pair of mild upsets, David Howard and Adam Stewart won individual titles in a strong first-day showing for Eastern Washington at the Big Sky Conference indoor championships in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Howard, an East Valley graduate and a transfer from the Community Colleges of Spokane, added nearly 2 feet to his lifetime best to win the shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 43/4 inches. Stewart, meanwhile, led teammate Steven Praast in a 1-3 finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-81/4. Howard and Stewart had entered the competition with the fourth- and fifth-best seasonal marks in their specialties. They helped EWU into second place in the men’s standings, 15 behind host Northern Arizona.
Eagles long jumpers Krystal Deyo and Brianna Okoro each topped 19 feet for the first time, Deyo edging her teammate for fourth by a quarter inch at 19-23/4, as Eastern stood fifth among the women.
•Idaho’s K.C. Dahlgren and James Rogan captured titles at the Western Athletic Conference indoor championships in Boise, as the Vandals women took a 10-point lead over Hawaii after the second day of competition.
Dahlgren won the women’s pole vault with a clearance of 13-41/4, continuing the long Idaho domination in the event started by former teammate Melinda Owen. Rogan claimed the men’s shot put crown with a heave of 54-31/4 as UI trailed Boise State 51-47, helped along by a 2-3-5-7 finish in the heptathlon led by Mike Carpenter.
•At the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships in Seattle, a third-place finish by Selkirk High’s Phil MacArthur in the weight throw (65-73/4) and a fifth in the women’s pole vault by Spokane’s Kendall Mays (13-51/4) were the top efforts for Washington State, which was eighth and 10th in the men’s and women’s standings.
Swimming
The Idaho Vandals are in seventh place with 129 points entering the final day of competition at the Western Athletic Conference championships in San Antonio.
