Late 3-pointer sinks Storm

Young’s shot at buzzer lifts Silver Stars over Seattle

Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO – Sophia Young hit a 3-pointer from 21 feet as the buzzer sounded to give the San Antonio Silver Stars a 74-71 victory over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night.

Becky Hammon led the Silver Stars with 24 points as San Antonio erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit. Young, who scored 15 points, was 4 of 17 before sinking the final shot.

“I didn’t make hardly any of my shots the whole game,” Young said. “It was just one of those things. They crowded off and helped on Becky (on the final play). I was just spotting up, trying to get ready to shoot.”

Seattle tied it when Tanisha Wright scored on a drive through the lane with 14 seconds left.

Rookie Megan Frazee added 15 points and seven rebounds as the defending Western Conference champion Silver Stars (8-8) won consecutive games for the second time this season.

Seattle (11-7) had won three straight.

“San Antonio made a good play,” said Seattle coach Brian Agler, a Silver Stars assistant two years ago. “We felt like the ball was going to get into (Hammon’s) hands at some point. She penetrated, drew a lot of attention and kicked it. Sophia hit a good shot on us.”

The Silver Stars have won six in a row against the Storm at home. Seattle has not won in San Antonio since Aug. 23, 2005. The Silver Stars have won nine of 12 meetings since then.

All five Seattle starters scored in double figures, led by Lauren Jackson’s 19. Wright scored 14, with 10 coming in the third quarter.
