Giants get Sanchez

Associated Press

The San Francisco Giants acquired infielder Freddy Sanchez from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, and made it a convenient switch for the three-time All-Star.

The teams announced the trade right after the Giants beat Pittsburgh 1-0 in 10 innings. Sanchez merely had to change clubhouses to join his new team, which is in the thick of the N.L. wild-card race.

San Francisco sent minor league pitcher Tim Alderson to the Pirates for the 31-year-old Sanchez, the 2006 N.L. batting champion.

Sanchez is hitting .296 with six home runs and 34 RBIs, and did not play in this week’s series against the Giants because of a tender knee.

•Astros reliever released from hospital: Houston Astros reliever Wesley Wright was out of a Chicago hospital after being treated the previous night for dehydration.

Wright had to take the mound in the second inning of Houston’s 11-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs after Astros ace Roy Oswalt hurt his lower back.

Wright allowed three runs in 21/3 innings and got his first career hit before he had to be rushed to Northwestern Hospital. Team officials thought he might have had appendi- citis because he had complained of discomfort in that area of his body.

•Orioles place Hill on DL: Baltimore Orioles left-hander Rich Hill has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with what the team termed “shoulder inflammation,” but the pitcher contends he’s had a torn labrum since the beginning of the season.

Hill is 3-3 with a 7.80 ERA in 14 games.
