NIC’s softball year ends

North Idaho College lost its second game at the Region 18 softball tournament in Salt Lake City to end the Cardinals’ season Friday.

The Cardinals (37-23) lost 4-1 to Snow College (18-33) to finish 1-2 in the tournament. Salt Lake Community College advanced to the final by beating College of Southern Idaho and will play either CSI or College of Southern Nevada – which ousted Snow 7-1 – for the title.

Nina Gonzales struck out 12 in the loss for NIC.

Rogers graduate Jessica Fagan had two hits and scored for North Idaho.

Pac-10: Washington (40-10, 13-7) had a five-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to visiting California. The Huskies had won their last 14 games at home. The Golden Bears (35-17, 10-9) scored an unearned run in the sixth. Jamia Reid tripled and scored when UW pitcher Danielle Lawrie’s throw following a grounder to the mound pulled Huskies first baseman Nikki Williams off the base.

NCAA Division III tourney: Whitworth University was shut out 5-0 by University of Texas at Tyler in the program’s first appearance in the national tournament in Claremont, Calif.

The Pirates were swept in three doubles matches and fell at No. 1 and 3 singles. The other singles matches weren’t completed.

Two of the doubles contests were close. Linh Aven and Mya Towne rallied from a 5-2 deficit to trail 6-5, but lost the next two. Whits Katie Staudinger and Justine Hays led 6-5 in the third doubles match, but lost three straight for an 8-6 setback.

Whitworth finished its best season in more than a decade with a 21-5 record. The Pirates were 16-0 in the Northwest Conference and also won the conference tournament to reach nationals.

Washington State’s Cory Mackay was injured in an auto accident while on his way to Redmond, Wash., from Pullman.

He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is listed in stable condition.

Golf

NCAA Central Regional: Idaho freshman Kayla Mortellaro improved 32 places after a second-round 73. Mortellaro started the day 69th, but shot up the ranks by shooting a 1-over.

The 54-hole tournament at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, concludes today.

Baseball

Pac-10: Washington got just two hits for six innings and even a four-run eighth couldn’t save the Huskies in a 6-4 loss to No. 25 Oregon State at Safeco Field.

Aaron Russell’s two-run single following two bases-loaded walks produced the runs for the Huskies (21-24, 10-9). OSU is 29-12, 12-7.
