Sports in brief: Serena beats Venus in Sony Ericsson final

Tennis: Serena Williams said she didn’t arrive at the Sony Ericsson Championships expecting to win.

Plenty of other people did that for her.

Williams bested big sister Venus again Sunday, winning 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the season-ending tournament at Doha, Qatar, for her third victory of the season. Williams also won Wimbledon and the Australian Open, and clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking earlier in the week.

“It feels great,” said Serena, who also won the WTA Tour’s season-ending event in 2001. “I totally didn’t expect to come here and win.”

Serena broke twice in the first set and lost only seven points on serve.

Melzer beats Cilic to take Vienna title: Jurgen Melzer defeated top-seeded Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-3 to win the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy in Vienna, his second career ATP title.

The 35th-ranked Melzer, seeded seventh, saved five break points to hold serve throughout. He broke Cilic three times in the final.

Ljubicic wins Lyon Grand Prix final: Third-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia won his first title in more than two years by beating Michael Llodra of France 7-5, 6-3 in the Lyon Grand Prix final at Lyon, France.

The 30-year-old Ljubicic’s previous title came at the Ordina Open in June 2007.

Ljubicic served seven aces and broke his French opponent three times on his way to winning in 1 hour, 36 minutes.

Ovechkin leaves game injured

Hockey: Capitals star Alex Ovechkin left Washington’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets with an undisclosed upper-body injury early in the second period and did not return.

Ovechkin briefly addressed the media after the game but would not comment on the cause or nature of the injury.

Ovechkin was tangled up with the Blue Jackets’ Raffi Torres about 6 minutes into the period and fell to the ice. After he got up, he grimaced and gingerly skated off the ice, heading straight to the locker room.

R.J. Umberger scored his second goal of the game on a power play 1:45 into overtime to give Columbus the win.

Lundqvist earns 150th win in shutout of Bruins: Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots for his 150th NHL victory and 21st career shutout, and Marian Gaborik returned from injury and scored for the fourth straight game as the visiting New York Rangers beat the Boston Bruins 1-0.

With most New York sports fans focused on a pair of NFL games involving local teams and the Yankees’ World Series run, the Rangers returned home from a disappointing road trip in which they went 0-2. .

Junior player in critical condition after check: A junior hockey player remains in critical condition with skull and facial fractures after a hard check into the glass during a game Friday night at Kitchener, Ontario.

Kitchener Rangers defenseman Ben Fanelli fell to the ice after getting hit by Erie’s Michael Liambas during a 4-0 victory in an Ontario Hockey League game.

Fanelli’s helmet went flying during the collision, and a pool of blood from a cut on his face formed on the ice under his head. The 16-year-old player was conscious when he was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital.

Wade gets 10,000th point in Heat win

Basketball: Dwyane Wade scored 25 points to push his career total to 10,005, Udonis Haslem had 19 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, and the Miami Heat stayed unbeaten by downing the Chicago Bulls 95-87 at Miami.

Carlos Arroyo scored 12 points, Mario Chalmers added 11 and Michael Beasley overcame a 3-of-12 shooting night to finish with 10 points and 11 rebounds for Miami, which took the lead for good on a jumper by Wade with 3:01 remaining.

Roy scores 16 as Trail Blazers rebound with win: Brandon Roy made a late push to finish with 16 points to lead the Portland Trail Blazers over the Oklahoma City Thunder 83-74 to split a two-game road trip.

One night after scoring 42 points in a loss at Houston, Roy struggled to get anything going on offense, missing on 12 of his first 16 shots. But teammate Steve Blake picked up some of the slack and finished with 18 points.

Vettel wins Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Auto Racing: Sebastian Vettel won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and Mark Webber hung on for second to give Red Bull a one-two finish in the final Formula One race of the season at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Brawn GP driver Jenson Button, who had already wrapped up the drivers’ championship, was third after pushing Webber to the line.

Massey races to Top Fuel win: Spencer Massey raced to his second Top Fuel victory of the season, beating No. 1 qualifier Larry Dixon in the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals.

Massey came in at 3.827 seconds at 314.53 mph at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, while Dixon smoked his tires, creating a tight battle for the season title because Dixon advanced two rounds more than point-leader Tony Schumacher.
