In brief: Woods takes two-shot lead in Australia

Golf: Tiger Woods shot a 68 in the second round of the Australian Masters today and had a two-shot lead over a pair of Australians still finishing up their rounds at Kingston Heath in Melbourne, Australia.

Before another massive gallery that topped 24,000, Woods opened with birdies to quickly take the lead. He lost his swing late in the hot afternoon, however, and missed two short birdie putts that added to his frustration.

He was at 10-under-par 134, two shots ahead of Greg Chalmers and James Nitties, who had two holes remaining at press time.

•Kim leads Ochoa Invitational: Song-Hee Kim shot a 7-under 65 Thursday in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico, to take a two-stroke lead over Jiyai Shin, Paula Creamer and Mariajo Uribe – and six-shot advantage over the top-ranked Ochoa at Guadalajara CC.

Ochoa shot a 71.

•Rose takes lead at Disney: Justin Rose shot a 7-under 65 in the opening round of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., edging upstart Rickie Fowler for the top spot on the leaderboard.

James, Cavaliers outlast Wade, Heat

NBA: LeBron James and Dwyane Wade put on a show in their first showdown of the season, and James scored 34 points to help the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Heat 111-104 in Miami. Wade scored 36 points.

Buckeyes cruise past James Madison

College basketball: Evan Turner had 24 points and 17 rebounds and No. 16 Ohio State (2-0) beat James Madison (0-1) 72-44 in Columbus, Ohio, at the 2K Sports Classic.

•Husky women sign three: The University of Washington women’s team signed in-state recruits Mercedes Wetmore (Auburn Riverside) and Marjorie Heard (Glacier Peak) plus Ashley Moore of California to letters of intent.

Vokoun, Panthers defeat Bruins in SO

NHL: Tomas Vokoun stopped 40 shots for his third shutout of the season, and Cory Stillman scored in a shootout to give the Florida Panthers a 1-0 victory over the Bruins in Boston.

•Devils continue road dominance: Niclas Bergfors had a goal and two assists and the New Jersey Devils closed within a victory of tying the NHL record of 10 consecutive road victories to start a season, beating the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1.

Lewis claims Browns overworked

Football: Frustrated by another losing season, veteran running back Jamal Lewis blasted Eric Mangini, Cleveland’s first-year coach, saying Mangini is pushing his players too hard in practice. But Lewis, who is one of Cleveland’s six captains and intends to retire after the season, has not taken his complaints to Mangini.

“Hey, this is his show, it’s not mine,” Lewis said. “It’s his show, it’s not my show. Not anybody else around here’s show. We’re just the crop. You’ve got to take care of your crop. If you don’t take care of your crop, when it comes time to harvest, you’re not going to make no money, because the crop ain’t no good.”

•Gage breaks bones in back: Tennessee receiver Justin Gage has several broken transverse process bones in his lower back, and he is unlikely to play Sunday against Buffalo.

The receiver was injured when he fell to the ground after making a leaping catch in last week’s 34-27 win at San Francisco.

•Morey played with concussion: Arizona Cardinals wide receiver and special teams player Sean Morey said he played with a concussion against the Chicago Bears last Sunday even though he has taken a lead role in raising awareness of head injuries.

Morey hasn’t practiced this week.

•Portis out against Denver: Clinton Portis’ concussion will keep the Washington Redskins’ running back out of Sunday’s game against Denver..

•ASU to start freshman QB: Arizona State freshman quarterback Brock Osweiler will start Saturday night’s game at No. 14 Oregon.

Osweiler is from Kalispell, Mont., and played at Flathead High last year.

Former Huskers RB sentenced to life: Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins said he felt no remorse for the death of a suspected drug dealer as he was sentenced in Omaha, Neb., to life in prison for his part in the killing.

Collins, 30, also was given 110 years on other counts in connection with the shooting that left 38-year-old Timothy Thomas dead, including attempted second-degree murder, assault and two weapons charges.

Another California man, Marshall Turner, was injured in the September 2008 incident that prosecutors said stemmed from a botched drug deal in which Collins had planned to rob the men.

Collins played for the Cornhuskers from 2000-02. His best season was in 2001, when he played in 12 games, ran for 647 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Baseball: Ichiro Suzuki won the Silver Slugger award, emblematic of being the best hitter at his position in the American League. This is Ichiro’s third Silver Slugger. Ichiro hit .352 in 2009. Managers and coaches vote for the awards.
