Pirates win opener
Keith Kirsch got the Whitworth men’s soccer team rolling early against Chapman, scoring in the seventh minute Saturday to help lead Whitworth (14-2-3) to 2-0 win in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Justin Meyer scored the Pirates’ second goal against Chapman (11-5-2), which outshot the Pirates 12-9. The Pirates will play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (12-7-2) at 1 p.m. today after the Stags upended host UC Santa Cruz 2-1.
•Hugo Sanchez and Sam Palmer scored consecutive goals in the first half and Community Colleges of Spokane beat host Whatcom (6-5-5) 3-1 in the NWAACC quarterfinals at Bellingham. The Sasquatch (9-8-4) will play Bellevue (12-4-4) in the semis at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Tukwila.
•Leading 2-0 after 12 minutes of action, Washington (5-7-6, 2-3-5 Pac-10) allowed three straight to Oregon State (9-6-3, 5-4-1), losing 3-2 in Seattle.
Women’s soccer
Community Colleges of Spokane forced overtime when Tacoma CC (9-6) kicked the ball into its net in the 79th minute. But CCS (10-5-4) could not take advantage in the extra period, as host TCC’s Breanna Brinkhaus scored in the 95th minute for the 3-2 win at the NWAACC quarters.
Volleyball
Meagan Ganzer had 14 kills for Washington State, but five USC players finished with double-digit kills as the No. 17 Trojans (17-9, 6-8 Pac-10) beat No. 25 WSU (16-10, 5-10) 24-26, 25-18, 28-26, 25-16.
•Layne Brosky and Michelle Boevers delivered 16 kills apiece and a combined 17 blocks and Gonzaga (10-16, 5-7 WCC) upended visiting San Francisco (12-13, 6-6) 27-25, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 18-16.
•Idaho (14-14, 10-5) fell on its home floor for the first time in Western Athletic Conference play, losing to No. 3 Hawaii (25-2, 15-0) 25-12, 25-15, 25-21.
•Sarah Todorovich was 10 for 10 in kill attempts and Hayley Hills added 13 kills and nine digs as Eastern Washington (17-9, 11-4 Big Sky) swept Northern Arizona (8-16, 5-10) 25-18, 25-16, 25-20) in Cheney.
•Kindra Carlson tallied 18 kills, 11 digs and six blocks as No. 4 Washington (21-4, 11-4 Pac-10) swept host UCLA (20-7, 10-4) 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.
