Quick start fuels Blackhawks’ victory

For the 13th time this season, Cheney put its first points on the board in the opening 10 minutes; with Madie Moore’s goal in the ninth minute giving Cheney (19-1) a 2-0 lead en route to a 5-0 victory over Ellensburg in the State 2A quarterfinals in Cheney.

The Blackhawks took 18 shots against the Bulldogs, with Tanya Baker adding two assists to her goal in the second half. Joining in the scoring for the Blackhawks were Chelsie Breen (3:00), Kellie Zakrzewski (38:00) and Briana Estrellado (76:00). On the attack for most of the match, they held Ellensburg to just three shots with keeper Nora Ifft converting three saves for Cheney’s 16th shutout of the year.

Cheney plays East Valley-Yakima in the semifinals Friday at 6 p.m. in Puyallup. EV-Yakima beat Fife 3-0 in its quarterfinal match to advance.

Girls basketball

Katelyn Loper scored 28 for Post Falls (1-0) in its 64-51 season-opening win over Moscow (0-1) in Moscow. Chelsea Waters led the Bears with 20 points, shooting 9 of 10 from the floor.
