Retiring San Jose State veteran football coach Dick Tomey announced he is retiring from coaching after 29 years. He will step down following San Jose State’s game against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 5.

Done The Allen Iverson experiment with the Memphis Grizzlies has come to an end. The NBA team announced Monday it has ended its one-year contract with the 10-time All-Star and former league MVP in what it called a mutual agreement. Iverson played just three games with the Grizzlies before taking an indefinite leave of absence on Nov. 7 to deal with a personal issue.

Honored The world’s top ranked golfer, Tiger Woods, will be an honorary captain for Stanford when the 14th-ranked Cardinal football team plays rival California in the Big Game on Saturday in Stanford, Calif. Woods will also be honored at halftime for his induction into the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame.

Leaving Utilityman Eric Bruntlett, who scored the winning run in the final game of the 2008 World Series, became a free agent after refusing a minor league assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Sick UFC president Dana White said that heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is recovering from a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract. White said he is encouraging Lesnar to check into the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for further treatment. He also said he did not know if the 32-year-old will fight again.

Died Hall of Fame horse trainer Bobby Frankel, who won the 2003 Belmont Stakes with Empire Maker, has died after a long bout with cancer. He was 68. Jockey agent Ron Anderson said Frankel died early Monday at home near Los Angeles.
