Regional roundup: Eastern’s Kragt on national all-academic team
Jacob Kragt, an Eastern Washington senior defensive end from Ritzville, has become the seventh Eagle to be named an ESPN The Magazine University Division first-team Academic All-American.
The seven Eagles have collected a total of nine awards, with two of the past winners selected twice each by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).
Kragt, who has a 3.89 grade-point average while majoring in biology/pre-med, was a three-time member of the All-District VIII team, being joined by teammate Chris Thomas, a senior offensive lineman from Sumner, Wash., on this year’s team. Both will be on the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the fourth time this fall.
Basketball
The Spokane playoff championships in the Elks National Free Throw Hoop Shoot will be Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. at Valley Christian High School. Local school Hoop Shoot directors are reminded to return the forms, including the names and details of their winners, to local director Doug Holland (496-5847).
College scene
Whitworth swimmers Natalie Turner and Michael Woodward were named the Northwest Conference student-athletes of the week for their sports last week.
Turner, a senior from South Lake Tahoe, Nev., was the women’s individual high-point winner at the Northwest Invite last weekend, with two of the victories, in the 200 and 500 freestyles, both NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Woodward, a junior from Springfield, Ore., shared men’s high-point honors. He had three individual wins and was on four winning relays as Whit- worth won the men’s title.
•Brett Tobin from Rathdrum, a 2008 graduate of Lakeland, is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound sophomore defenseman on the University of St. Thomas Tommies NCAA Division III hockey team.
Football
Two Spokane Pop Warner Trojans teams returned from Santa Clara, Calif., last weekend with Pacific Northwest Regional Division III championships.
The Pee Wee team for 9-12-year-olds capped a 10-0 season, which included three playoff victories, with a 27-0 win over the Klamath Falls, Ore., Cougars in the regional playoff.
The Junior Midget Trojans (9-1) for 10-13-year-olds defeated the Sagebrush Empire Reno, Nev., Ravens 38-7 for their ninth straight victory after losing their season opener.
Most of the players on the two teams have been together for three or four years and many of the coaches do double duty with the teams.

Softball
Chuck Stewart, who is retiring after 16 years as Spokane Amateur Softball Association umpire in chief, was honored by his peers, who have named an award in his honor.
The Spokane Softball Umpires Association announced at its annual awards banquet that it was renaming the group’s oldest and most prestigious award to include his name. The F. Bruce Campbell Award, given since 1975 for longevity, service and dedication to softball umpiring, will now be known as the Campbell-Stewart Award.
Stewart, an umpire for 25 years and the longest serving UIC in Spokane, was named the first recipient. Campbell had received the first award in his honor.
Marty Boles, a 24-year umpire who has worked three ASA national tournaments and four state high school tournaments, was the last recipient of the singularly-named Campbell Award.
Other awards went to Kathleen Burns, Presidential Pride; Randy Harnasch, umpire of the year, adult phase; Dave Berghammer, umpire of the year-youth; Daniel Isotalo, most improved-adult; Jeff Camp, most improved-youth; Tom Doty, rookie of the year-adult; and Tom Haydon, rookie of the year-youth.
•Ken Mathia, the vice president of the adult phase the last two years, was elected president of the Spokane Softball Umpires Association, succeeding Dallas Williams.
Other new officers: Gary Kuck, vice president-adult; Bill Elston, VP-youth; Marty Boles, director of ratings; Jeff Camp, Mitch Ebat and Tammy Doffek, members at large. Mike Yellin, the secretary, is the only holdover board member.
Swimming
Taylor Indahl of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Lora Lougee from Santa Maria, Calif., have signed national letters of intent with Washington State, Cougars coach Erica Quam announced.
Indahl is a four-time league champion in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke while Lougee is a distance freestyle swimmer who has also excelled in the breaststroke and individual medley.
