Opportunistic ’Hawks win defensive battle
Cheney pulled out a 12-0 Great Northern League win over Pullman and gain a first-place tie with West Valley, which won a non-league game Friday night.
The Blackhawks (3-2, 2-0) were outgained by the Greyhounds (2-3, 1-1), totaling just 67 yards of total offense, but forced three Pullman turnovers.
Matt Walker connected on a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter and the Blackhawks scored on a 26-yard hookup from Ben Bissell to Alex Adams, which was also their longest play from scrimmage.
Colville 12, Medical Lake 7: The Indians (3-2, 1-1) scored on a 12-yard run from Brock Dotts with 2:31 remaining in the game and recovered a fumble by the Cardinals (2-3, 0-2) on the ensuing kickoff to earn the victory at Colville.
Dotts powered his way for 142 yards on the ground on 17 carries and the Indians forced the first turnover by either team to slam the door on any thoughts of a Medical Lake comeback.
Northeast A
Freeman 37, Newport 13: Junior Josh Richardson carried the ball across the goal line four times for the host Scotties (1-3, 1-0) and chalked up 326 all-purpose yards against the Grizzlies (0-4, 0-2).
Newport controlled the clock early, scoring on a 14-play drive that chewed up 7:30 in the first, but the Scotties dominated the second half, allowing just 32 yards.
Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 26, Kettle Falls 25: The Eagles (1-4, 1-0) took a 19-0 lead into the half, but the visiting Bulldogs battled back to tie the game at the end of regulation.
After Trevon Zykowski scored in the overtime, though, the Bulldogs missed the extra point and the Eagles took advantage, with Chad Brinkman hitting Evan Dobbs for a 9-yard TD and Lakeside kicker Ryan Phillips hitting the ensuing extra point for the win.
Non-league
Sandpoint 36, Lewiston 0: The Bulldogs (4-2) employed a bruising ground game against the Bengals (3-2), tallying 367 yards rushing and moving the ball effectively with 19 first downs at Lewiston.
West Valley 27, Lakeland 6: The Eagles (5-0, 2-0) rushed for 286 yards against the Hawks (2-4), controlling the clock for the win at West Valley.
Dylan Ellsworth ran for 127 yards, including a 58-yard scamper to give the Eagles a 14-point edge early in the second quarter.
Riverside 15, Chewelah 14: The Rams (3-2, 0-2) used a 9-yard TD run by Chase Florez and a two-point conversion to take their first lead with 1:34 remaining, and held on to beat the Cougars (1-4) in Chewelah. Florez had 173 yards rushing and two TDs.
Selkirk 16, Republic 10: The Rangers (4-1) used stout defense backed up on their goal line to knock off the Tigers (0-4) in Republic. Mike Dewey rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Garfield-Palouse 12, St. John-Endicott 8: Trailing into the fourth quarter, the visiting Vikings (1-2) scored 12 unanswered points against the Eagles (2-3, 0-1) on two rushing TDs from Taylor Christopher.
Northeast 1B
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 46, Wellpinit 0: The Warriors (5-0, 5-0) scored the game’s final points on a 29-yard run by Cody McCleary midway through the third quarter to invoke the mercy rule against the Redskins (2-2, 2-2).
Dylan Tipps took the ball 11 times for 125 yards on the ground.
Inchelium 38, Sprague-Harrington 28: Mike Smith filled in for the host Hornets (1-5, 1-5) in a big way against the Falcons (1-3, 1-3). With starting quarterback Dylan Wulff injured in the opening half, Smith moved from tight end to running back in the second half and toted the ball 18 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns to propel the Hornets to their first win of the season.
Odessa 48, Curlew 14: Easton Crossley provided the Tigers (2-3, 2-3) with plenty of scoring production against the visiting Cougars (0-5, 0-5) with 141 yards rushing and 190 yards receiving and a combined seven touchdowns. Crossley also led a dominant Odessa defense with two picks.
Columbia 38, Wilbur-Creston 6: Eli Bear scored three rushing touchdowns for the visiting Lions (4-1, 4-1) and Paul Larrew had 119 yards rushing, 85 yards receiving and two TDs in a win over the Wildcats.

Reardan 43, Lind-Ritzville 19: After the visiting Broncos (1-3, 0-1) scored the first seven points of the game, the Indians (2-2, 1-1) scored 43 unanswered for their first league win. Chase Bell and Chris Pence combined for 344 yards and five TDs on the ground.
Davenport 24, Liberty 14: The Gorillas (3-1, 2-0) outgained the Lancers (1-3, 0-1) 302 yards to 152 and built an 18-point lead by halftime. Connor Glick rushed for 118 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown for Davenport.
Southeast 1B
Colton 66, LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus 20: The Wildcats (4-0, 2-0) scored early and often against the defending State 1B champion Tigercats (4-1, 1-1), handing the hosts their first loss of the season. Sam Robertson crossed the goal line five times, rushing for 279 yards on 29 carries, and Josh Straughn was 11 of 17 passing for 236 yards and three TDs.

Asotin 36, Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia 19: The Panthers (5-0, 2-0) scored the game’s first 30 points and held off a late run by the Nighthawks (1-3, 0-2) in Asotin. Levi Forsberg rushed for two touchdowns for Asotin.
Intermountain
Timberlake 47, Orofino 7: The Tigers (4-1, 2-0) upended the defending league-champion Maniacs (2-3, 1-1) in Orofino.
Priest River 20, Bonners Ferry 12: Playing around a thunderstorm, the Spartans (4-1, 1-1) outlasted the Badgers (3-1, 1-1) in a run-oriented contest.
North Star
Clark Fork 52, Lakeside (Plummer) 16: The Wampus Cats (1-4, 1-4) built a 16-point lead by halftime over the visiting Knights (2-3, 2-3) with two rushing touchdowns by Howard Katzenburg and two safeties by Taylor Scott.
Kootenai 44, Wallace 6: The Warriors (6-0, 5-0) ensured their unbeaten streak to start the season would continue by scoring 44 consecutive points against the visiting Miners (3-2, 3-2) at Harrison.
