Grass isn’t greener

The Spokesman-Review

As (former Boise State football coach) Dan Hawkins’ time at Colorado winds down, I can’t help but think about him and another coach named Dan who did what conventional wisdom dictated. And no matter what either of them would say, they would change those decisions in a minute. When you make a splash at a non-major school, whatever the sport, the normal path is to choose from the offers from bigger, more affluent schools looking to return to their glory days. Get out while the getting is good because, after all, the success at their current school can’t last. Except it did at Gonzaga and Boise State. In fact, that “peak” turned out to be just the foundation for those programs. Of course, there are lots of examples of using a smaller program to leap into prominence, but the grass is not always greener. Ask Dan.
