Injured The daughter of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is recovering after surgery to repair injuries sustained on a family trip to Central Washington over the bye weekend. Hasselbeck posted on his Twitter site he had the “worst bye week ever. 6 year old daughter got hit by a dirt bike.” The father of three said he spent his weekend at the hospital. He thanked the dentist who repaired Mallory’s mouth and the staff at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. He also thanked the staff who treated Mallory at Seattle Children’s Hospital upon the family’s return home. He said she will miss her basketball season but will recover.
Banished Kansas City running back Larry Johnson was told to stay away from the team while the NFL and the Chiefs complete their investigation into his use of a gay slur. As Johnson was releasing his apology, a national gay rights advocacy organization called on the league and the team to take disciplinary action against the two-time Pro Bowler. He used the slur during an exchange with one of his Twitter followers.
Filed Former Dodgers CEO Jamie McCourt filed for divorce from Dodgers owner Frank McCourt in Los Angeles and asked a judge to reinstate her as the team’s chief executive. Court documents cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The McCourts have been married since 1979 and have four grown sons. Frank McCourt fired his wife as the team’s chief executive last week when the Dodgers were eliminated from the playoffs by Philadelphia.
Died A Hampton University basketball player has died from what police called an accidental shooting outside a nightclub. Theo Smalling of Tampa, Fla., died Monday night, according to a university statement. Police said the 22-year-old team captain was shot in the abdomen early Saturday in the parking lot of a nightclub after another man mishandled a firearm. Police have charged Dominique Devon Smith, 21, with reckless handling of a firearm.
Replaced Joe Gibbs Racing will replace Kyle Busch ’s crew chief after this weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway. Steve Addington is out after 12 victories in 68 races running Busch’s team. He’ll be replaced by Dave Rog ers, a crew chief for JGR in the Nationwide Series.
Returned Ex-Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight has two more complaints with the university. He didn’t like the school making a private matter public, and he didn’t want Indiana alumni footing the bill to settle a lawsuit. Knight released a statement saying he will return a $75,000 check sent last week by Indiana officials as a settlement offer.
