Lakeside rules district meet
Behind individual champions Ryan Rojeski and Evangeline Rehwaldt, Lakeside’s boys and girls captured team titles in the District 7 1A cross country state-qualifying races at the Chewelah Golf and Country Club Thursday.
The top two teams in each race advance to state in Pasco Nov. 7.
The real race was for second among girls. Chewelah made state by one point over Newport and two over Freeman.
Rojeski won in 17 minutes, 13 seconds to edge teammate Colton Berry by 1 second. The Eagles had 29 points, Freeman 40.
Among girls, Rehwaldt finished in 20:30 to beat teammate Kenna Middleton by 9 seconds. The Eagles finished with 23 points.
Girls soccer
•Great Northern League: DeeDee Garbe scored two goals to lift West Valley to a 2-1 win over visiting Pullman, pulling the Eagles (13-3, 34 points) into tie with the Greyhounds (12-2, 34 points) for second as the regular season ended. The teams play again Saturday for the second seed to district. … There will also be a tiebreaker between Colville and Medical Lake to decide fifth. place. •District 7/9 2B/1B: Evan Furbeyre scored in the first half and Molly O’Brien added a clincher as host St. George’s (11-3) blanked Northwest Christian (5-9) 2-0 in a seeding game.
Volleyball
•Bi-County 2B tournament: At Davenport, Kenzie Graber and Katie Vesneske had 11 kills apiece to lead the third-seeded Gorillas to a sweep of No. 6 Liberty in the opening game of the tournament. At Lind-Ritzville, the No. 4 Broncos pulled out a tight, four-game win over No. 5 Reardan. No game was decided by more than four points.
•Great Northern League: Pullman wrapped up a perfect regular season with a three-game sweep at Cheney (6-8). It was a strong defensive effort for the Greyhounds (14-0), who got 17 digs from Cayley Byrne. … Shaniqua Nilles and Bailey Wold had seven kills apiece as West Valley (12-2) swept at Deer Park (1-13). … Behind Leanna Carr, who had 17 assists, Colville (10-4) won in three games at Medical Lake (1-13). … Riverside (7-7) also had a three-game sweep at Clarkston (5-9).
Football
Chewelah 41, Freeman 7: The Cougars (5-4, 4-0) wrapped up the Northeast A title as Bobby Sulgrove, who carried 18 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns burned the Scotties (2-6, 2-2). Sam Fisk completed 9 of 10 passes for 145 yards and two TDs to Blaze Smith.
Lakeside 43, Newport 13: Eagle (3-6, 2-2) QB Chad Brinkman completed just 10 of 21 passes, but they covered 323 yards and included three touchdowns to go with his three rushing scores. Zack Smith had three catches for 197 yards, including TDs of 72 and 70 yards Keith Coulson had 12 yards for the Grizzlies (1-7, 4-4).
•Freeman, Lakeside and Kettle Falls (4-5, 2-2) ended up in a three-way tie for second and will play a Kansas tiebreaker at 6 p.m. Monday in Chewelah to determine the second and third seeds into the playoffs.
Cusick 64, Wellpinit 12: Tyler Edwards returned the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown and the top-ranked Panthers (9-0, 8-0) were never challenged in the Northeast 1B game against the visiting Redskins (3-5, 2-5). Edwards also scored on a 55-yard pass play from Spencer Shanholtzer and had a 67-yard run on his only carry.
Kettle Falls 36, Springdale 20: Jack Redding picked up 146 yards on just five carries, including an 89-yard touchdown run, in the Bulldogs’ (4-5) non-league win over the visiting Chargers (1-6). He also had an 80-yard kickoff return.
