Hired Iowa State hired former Cyclones star Fred Hoiberg as its new men’s basketball coach. Iowa State announced the hiring late Tuesday night. He was a prep star in Ames, Iowa, before becoming one of the top players in Cyclones history. Hoiberg played 10 seasons in the NBA and was the vice president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Injured Denver Broncos All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady underwent surgery to repair a torn left patellar tendon and will be out for several months, according to a published report. The Denver Post reported that Clady suffered the knee injury while playing basketball. Clady was the 12th overall pick out of Boise State in 2008.

Traded The Chicago Bears traded safety Kevin Payne to the St. Louis Rams for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick. Payne started 22 of 32 games in three seasons and had 195 tackles with four interceptions.

Signed The Toronto Maple Leafs signed free-agent goaltender Ben Scrivens to a one-year entry-level contract. Scrivens, 23, was a finalist for the 2010 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the NCAA’s top player.

•The Arizona Cardinals re-signed nose tackle Bryan Robinson to a one-year contract. The 13-year NFL veteran has started the past two seasons for the Cardinals.

Died Diver Victoria Manalo Draves, the first woman to win two gold medals in diving in the same Olympics – in the 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform competitions in London in 1948 – and the first Asian-American to win an Olympic medal, died of complications from pancreatic cancer in Palm Springs, Calif. She was 85.

Docked NASCAR docked Brad Keselowski 50 points in the Nationwide Series because his car failed inspection following his win at Talladega Superspeedway. Keselowski’s lead in the Nationwide standings dropped from 60 points to 10 after the penalty.

Switched Ice dancers Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates are leaving their longtime coaches for Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, who trained the gold and silver medalists at the Vancouver Games. The skaters spent the last 10 years with Yuri Chesnichenko and Yaroslava Nechaeva.
