1940 season ended at regionals

Tom Lacy Spokane
In 1940 four teams from Spokane competed – Lewis and Clark, North Central, Rogers and Gonzaga High School. The Valley had two schools – West Valley and Central Valley. The Valley had three players who played with Gonzaga and were coached by Bill Frazier. Gonzaga and North Central wound up in a tie, and a playoff for the championship at the old Ferris Field. Gonzaga won the city title and traveled to Yakima for a playoff there. Before going to Yakima, Legion officials declared the three Valley players ineligible. We went to Yakima with 12 players, all from Gonzaga. We won there, then went on to Shelton where we won the state championship. The next trip was to regionals in Miles City, Mont. We were eliminated by Oregon in the first game. It wasn’t too bad a summer!
