In brief: Hopson leads Tennessee past No. 3 Pitt

College basketball: Scotty Hopson sliced through No. 3 Pitt’s man-to-man defense for a career-high 27 points and No. 11 Tennessee (7-0) dealt the Panthers (10-1) their first nonconference loss in Pittsburgh in nearly six years, winning 83-76 on Saturday.

Melvin Goins added 19 points and Cameron Tatum hit a succession of big shots while scoring 14 points as the Volunteers opened leads of as many as 21 points against the Panthers.

Brad Wanamaker scored 21 points, but Pitt still lost a nonconference game in the city for the first time in 58 games, or since a Jan. 2, 2005, loss to Bucknell.

• Spartans survive upset scare: Kalin Lucas scored 25 points to help No. 7 Michigan State (7-3) hold off Oakland (Mich.) 77-76 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Keith Benson had 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Golden Grizzlies (5-5).

• Louisville edges UNLV: Preston Knowles scored all 20 of his points in the second half and No. 24 Louisville (8-0) posted a 77-69 win over No. 20 UNLV (9-1) in the Billy Minardi Classic in Louisville, Ky.

• Duke makes it 20 straight: Nolan Smith scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half and No. 1 Duke (10-0) routed Saint Louis (3-4) 84-47 in Durham, N.C., to claim its 20th straight win – 10 of them this season.

• Cal self-imposes sanctions: The California men’s basketball team has self-imposed sanctions on the program for violating rules about phone calls to recruits.

The school released a statement saying officials quickly reported the infractions to the NCAA and Pac-10 as soon as they were discovered.

• Syracuse women upset Ohio State: Erica Morrow scored a season-high 27 points, Tasha Harris hit a key 3-pointer late and Syracuse (8-0) upset No. 6 Ohio State (7-1) 75-66 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Mavericks’ winning streak reaches 12

NBA: Dirk Nowitzki had 31 points and 15 rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 103-97 victory over the Utah Jazz in Dallas.

• Raptors rally past Pistons: Jerryd Bayless matched a career high with 31 points and the Toronto Raptors pulled off the biggest comeback in franchise history – overcoming a 25-point second-half deficit – to beat the Detroit Pistons 120-116 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

• Celtics win 10th in a row: Ray Allen and Glen Davis scored 16 points apiece and the Boston Celtics cruised to a 93-62 win over the Charlotte Bobcats at Charlotte, N.C., to run their winning streak to 10.

• Heat streak on: Dwyane Wade tossed in 36 points, LeBron James scored 25 and Chris Bosh added 14 points and a season-high 17 rebounds to power the Miami Heat to their season-best eighth straight win, 104-83 over the host Kings at Sacramento, Calif.

Flyers topple Bruins in overtime

NHL: Mike Richards scored with 3 seconds left in overtime to give Philadelphia a 2-1 win over the host Boston Bruins.

• Penguins make it 12 straight: Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to their 12th straight win, 5-2 over the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo, N.Y.

• Avs keep Caps reeling: Paul Stastny had a goal and two assists, Craig Anderson had 40 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat Washington 3-2 to hand the host Capitals their fifth straight defeat.

Tinning wins Ladies Masters, retires

Golf: Iben Tinning of Denmark ended her career with a victory at the Dubai Ladies Masters, clinching the win with a birdie on the last hole to hold off Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist by two shots in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Tinning, who is retiring after 15 years on the tour, shot a 3-under-par 69 to finish at 11-under 277.

• Shark Shootout tied: Champions Tour players Fred Funk and Kenny Perry shot a 10-under 62 in better-ball play for a share of the second-round lead in the Shark Shootout in Naples, Fla., with defending champions Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly.

Brazile secures second triple crown

Rodeo: Trevor Brazile added team and tie-down roping world titles to his all-around crown in the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas to become the third PRCA competitor to win multiple triple crowns.

Tyson Durfey of Colbert finished tied for fourth in the final round of tie-down roping, earning $5,931.49. He placed 13th for the season with earnings of $115,018.84.

American Ligety wins giant slalom

Skiing: American Ted Ligety beat Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway by more than a second in Val d’Isere, France, for his seventh career victory.

Ligety won with a combined time of 2:26.26.

• Women’s race called off: Strong winds forced race officials to call off the women’s World Cup super-G race in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Czisny captures GP Gold in China

Miscellany: American Alissa Czisny protected her overnight lead to take gold after the women’s free skate at the Grand Prix final in Beijing.

Patrick Chan of Canada won the men’s competition.

• Turbulent Descent wins: Turbulent Descent remained undefeated with a 1 1/4-length win in the $412,250 Hollywood Starlet at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.
