Killed High school football star Rajaan Bennett a Vanderbilt University signee, was shot to death early Thursday in Powder Springs, Ga., by his mother’s ex-boyfriend.

Officers heard four or five gunshots around 2:30 a.m. as they arrived at the Bennett’s home to investigate reports of an armed intruder. Clifton Steger shot Bennett and then killed himself. Bennett’s uncle, Taiwan Hunter, was wounded and underwent surgery. He was in critical condition.

Extended Idaho State University head football coach John Zamberlin received a contract extension through 2012 and includes a flat, $104,000 annual base salary. Zamberlin coached at Central Washington University for 10 years before he was hired in December 2006 to replace Larry Lewis.

Finished UCLA forward James Keefe will have surgery on his left shoulder next week, marking the end of the senior’s college career. Keefe had surgery on the same shoulder in 2007 to repair a torn labrum. Keefe averaged 2.2 points and 2.8 rebounds and started 13 of the 20 games he played this season.

Retired Buffalo Bills starting right tackle Brad Butler announced his retirement after four NFL seasons. A fifth-round pick in 2006, Butler started all but two of the 33 games in which he played. The government studies major at Virginia will instead devote himself to “education, country and community.”

Arrested The woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape nearly four years ago has been charged with attempted murder, arson, assault and other counts in Durham, N.C. Crystal Mangum was arrested late Wednesday and will remain in jail on a $1 million bond after a fight with her boyfriend.

Settled Pitcher Wandy Rodriguez lost to the Houston Astros in salary arbitration. Rodriguez will be paid $5 million this year instead of the $7 million he sought. Rodriguez was 14-12 last season with a 3.02 ERA, ninth in the N.L. among qualifiers.

•Infielder Erick Aybar and the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a $2.05 million, one-year contract that avoided arbitration.
