Cougars win golf tourney
Nick Ellis and Trent Sanders tied for fourth place to help lead the Washington State Cougars to a victory in the Snowman Getaway men’s golf tournament on Tuesday at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
Ellis and Sanders finished the 54-hole event with 215 totals and guided the Cougars to an 871-878 victory over runner-up Missouri.
The Idaho Vandals were third at 879, while Missouri-Kansas City was fourth at 883. UMKC’s Brett Iliff was the medalist with a 5-under-par 211.
Idaho’s Brad Tensen and Air Force’s Tom Whitney tied for second at 213.
Gonzaga, which was led by Derek Cheney’s 229, finished 11th in the three-team event with a 931.
Junior hockey
Jake Peterson scored the winning goal in the third period and the Spokane Braves edged the visiting Castlegar Rebels 4-3 to knot their best-of-7 KIJHL playoff series at 2-2.
Keagan Little had a hat trick for Castlegar.
Chip Petrino, Dillon Tappe and Uriah Machuga also scored goals for Spokane.
•Also for the Braves, Jesse Collins of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., was named rookie of the year and Chase Wharton of Kennewick was named best defenseman in the Neil Murdoch Division.
