Chiefs snap streak with win

Jared Spurgeon scored late in the second period and Michael Tadjdeh added 35 saves to help the Spokane Chiefs put an end to a season-high five-game losing streak Saturday, beating Vancouver 2-1 at Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Chiefs (22-13-3-0) trailed early in the game on a goal by Vancouver’s Brendan Gallagher with 6:14 gone in the opening period, but Mitch Wahl responded for the Chiefs three minutes later, scoring on an assist from Kyle Beach.

Sixteen minutes into the second period, Spurgeon put Spokane ahead for good, scoring on a one-timer from the slot on a 4-on-3 power play.

“It was a great effort all the way around,” Spokane coach Hardy Sauter said. “We were gritty and hard-nosed throughout. Our leadership group made all the difference in this one.”

Taking the win in net for the Chiefs was Tadjdeh, who recorded 15 of his 35 saves in the final period. During that same period, the Chiefs had just four shots on goal against the Giants (24-15-1-2).

•Scott Morisseau scored a pair of goals for the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in a 4-2 win over the Spokane Braves (22-16-0-2) in KIJHL play at Fruitvale, B.C.

Spokane took a lead early in the first period on a goal by Rance Hughes, but allowed three goals in the second to fall behind 3-1 going into the final frame.

Cash Ulrich finished with 31 saves for the Braves, but they could not solve Paul Barclay, who finished with 57 saves.
