Extended NFL Pro Bowl left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson agreed Wednesday to terms on a contract extension with the New York Jets, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press. A second person familiar with the negotiations said it’s a six-year deal for $60 million. Both people requested anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed. Ferguson, selected to his first Pro Bowl last season, is one of the anchors of an offensive line that helped the Jets lead the league in rushing a year ago. Ferguson was the team’s first-round draft pick, fourth overall, in 2006. He was entering the fifth year of his $37.5 million rookie deal.
Signed Restricted free agent forward Brandon Yip, who led all NHL rookies in goals per game last season, has signed a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. Yip was recalled by the Avalanche on Dec. 18 and finished with 11 goals and 19 points in 32 games. He was second on the team with two goals and two assists in six playoff games. He missed the first two months of the season with a hand injury and most of March with a shoulder injury.
Agreed Defenseman Jeff Schultz has agreed to a four-year, $11 million contract to remain with the Washington Capitals. The 24-year-old Schultz led the NHL last season with a plus-50 rating and had a team-high 129 blocked shots. He had three goals and career highs of 20 assists and 23 points in 73 games. Schultz, the Capitals’ first-round choice – 27th overall – in the 2004 entry draft, was a restricted free agent and had filed for salary arbitration prior to Monday’s deadline.
Born NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson is a father, and it won’t interfere with his racing schedule. Johnson’s wife, Chandra, gave birth to a daughter. A Johnson spokesperson said that the mother and the baby are doing well, and no other details will be released. It is the reigning four-time champion’s first child. Johnson was prepared to miss a race if his wife went into labor, and with the birth of his daughter expected this weekend, he had Aric Almirola on standby should he need to leave Saturday night’s race at Chicago.
