Waived The New York Giants announced that they waived kick returner Chris Davis after he failed his physical. The Giants had claimed Davis on waivers last week in a move to get a veteran returner after Domenik Hixon suffered a major knee injury during a mandatory minicamp earlier in the month.
Acquired The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Daniel Winnik from the Phoenix Coyotes for a fourth-round pick in the 2012 NHL draft. Winnik had four goals and 15 assists in 74 games for Phoenix last season, when he led the team’s forwards with 54 blocked shots and was second on the club with 30 takeaways. Signed Forty-two-year-old Mark Recchi signed a one-year contract to return to the Boston Bruins for a 22nd NHL season, making him the league’s oldest active player under contract. It also gives him a chance to play with 18-year-old prospect Tyler Seguin – the No. 2 overall selection in last week’s draft. He is ninth in career NHL games played with 1,571.
Leaving Barcelona says striker Thierry Henry has agreed to leave the club by mutual consent. Henry helped Barcelona to a record six major trophies in 2009, including the Champions League. But the Frenchman scored only four goals last season. He had one year left on his contract.
Died A mixed martial arts fighter has died from brain injuries in his professional debut. The Aiken County coroner said that 30-year-old Michael Kirkham died from bleeding inside the brain. Coroner Tim Carlton said Kirkham collapsed following Saturday night’s fight at the USC Aiken Convocation Center.
