Cougs move to 8-0
Washington State got good starts from Chad Arnold and Spencer Jackson to lead the Cougars (8-0) to a doubleheader baseball sweep of Utah on Friday in Pullman.
Arnold (2-0) tossed the first complete game of his career as WSU won the opener 5-1. In the nightcap, Jackson (2-0) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings as the Cougars won 6-2.
Shea Vucinich went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs in the opener. Ryan Peterson and Derek Jones each had two RBIs for the day, with Jones hitting a mammoth home run in the nightcap.
The teams continue their four-game series at 2 p.m. today.
•A run on a wild pitch with two out in the bottom of the 10th gave Centenary a 2-1 win over Gonzaga in Shreveport, La.
The Bulldogs (2-4) scored their run in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Chris Sturdivant. Gonzaga starter Cody Martin allowed one run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked three.
The three-game series continues at noon PST today.
Softball
Jessica Ross had two home runs and eight RBIs on the day and Alyssa Erickson struck out eight in the second game as North Idaho College swept a doubleheader with Blue Mountain Community College (2-2) in Pendleton, Ore., winning 14-0 and 9-1.
Juliann Hartnett added six RBIs in the doubleheader for the Cardinals (19-11).
Junior hockey
The Spokane Braves used a four-goal second period en route to a 5-2 win over the Nelson Leafs at Eagles Ice-A-Rena to even their Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoff series at two games each.
Game 5 is Sunday at 1 p.m. in Nelson, British Columbia, with Game 6 in Spokane on Monday. A Game 7, if necessary, would be Tuesday at Nelson.
Track and field
Eastern Washington’s Nicole Luckenbach was named the indoor field athlete of the meet for her performance at the Big Sky Conference Championships on Feb. 27.
Luckenbach won the weight throw with a throw of 65 feet, 9 inches, her career best and a meet record. She also broke her school record.
Arena football
The Spokane Shock designated quarterback Casey Hansen for reassignment.
Training camp begins March 15, and the regular season begins April 2 against Milwaukee at the Arena.
