Abundance of state champions

Several state high school basketball championships were decided Saturday night in Washington and Idaho, with area teams collecting four championship trophies.

In Washington, the Colfax girls won the 2B championship at the Spokane Arena. Also, Freeman won the 1A girls championship. Mead fell in overtime to Auburn Riverside in the 4A girls title game (see story this page).

In Idaho, Post Falls won the 5A boys championship and Priest River claimed the 3A boys championship (Stories, C5).

Colfax repeats at girls State 2B

Kayla Johnson, the tournament Most Valuable Player for the second straight year, scored 19 points as Colfax successfully defended its 2009 title by beating La Salle 52-43 in the State 2B girls championship game Saturday night.

Colfax led by as many as 18 points (34-16) in the first half and had its biggest lead of the game at 50-27 with 4:50 left in the game.

Freeman girls win first 1A title

Freeman’s defense and Korina Baker were more than enough, and the Scotties won their first girls State 1A title with a 56-35 win over Granger at Yakima.

Baker, the tournament’s MVP, scored 12 points and added four steals.

The title earned Freeman its fifth trophy in seven straight state trips.
