Retired Six years after he was traded away for the final pieces of Boston’s World Series puzzle, Nomar Garciaparra finally got a friendly farewell from the Red Sox. Garciaparra signed a ceremonial one-day contract with the Red Sox on Wednesday for the purpose of retiring in the uniform of his original team. Garciaparra announced he’s leaving baseball at 36 to become an ESPN analyst, ending a 14-year career in which he was a six-time All-Star, two-time batting champion and 1997 A.L. Rookie of the Year.
Suspended Minnesota Timberwolves forward Ryan Hollins was suspended for two games after separate run-ins with the Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki and DeShawn Stevenson in Dallas’ 125-112 win in Minneapolis on Monday night.
Expelled American sprinter Ivory Williams has been pulled off the U.S. team for the World Indoor Championships after testing positive for marijuana. USA Track and Field said that Williams was disqualified after he won the 60-meter race at the U.S. indoor championships in Albuquerque, N.M., less than two weeks ago. He was replaced by Trell Kimmons.
Signed Disgraced sprinter Marion Jones, once called the world’s fastest woman, was signed to at least a one-year contract by the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock. Jones, 34, was the starting point guard on North Carolina’s national championship team in 1994. She was drafted by Phoenix in 2003 but never played.
Recalled The Atlanta Thrashers called up 48-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, an 11-time All-Star. Chelios, who has played in more games than any other American-born NHL player, joins the Thrashers after getting five goals and 17 assists in 46 games with Chicago of the AHL.
Convicted Prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner Ernie Paragallo was convicted in Catskill, N.Y., of mistreating dozens of malnourished horses on his Hudson Valley farm. A judge convicted Paragallo of 33 of 34 misdemeanor animal cruelty counts. He could face up to two years in jail and $33,000 in fines, $1,000 for each count.
