Brandon reaches Memorial Cup final
BRANDON, Manitoba – Jay Fehr scored at 3:16 of overtime to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-4 win over the Calgary Hitmen in the Memorial Cup semifinal on Friday night.
Despite taking leads of 2-0 and 3-1, the Hitmen couldn’t hold off the hard-charging Wheat Kings, who seemed to thrive off of playing in front of a home crowd of 5,235 at Westman Place.
With the loss, Calgary’s impressive playoff run came to an abrupt end at the hands of the Wheaties, whom the Hitmen beat 5-1 two nights earlier in a preliminary-round game.
Travis Hamonic tallied a goal and two assists for the Wheat Kings, while Brayden Schenn set up three goals. Alexander Urbom, Matt Calvert and Colby Robak also scored for Brandon and Scott Glennie had two assists.
Tyler Fiddler led the way for the Hitmen with a goal and an assist, while Joel Broda, Ian Schultz and Misha Fisenko also scored.
After missing the final two games of the preliminary round with an ankle injury, Brandon Kozun returned to the Calgary lineup and chipped in a pair of assists.
Brandon goalie Jacob De Serres stopped 25 of 29 shots he faced.
Brandon plays Windsor for the title Sunday.
