Area roundup: Sweep puts CCS in second

Kelsey Kurtz piled up 18 assists, 13 digs and seven kills Wednesday as Community Colleges of Spokane took over second place in the NWAACC’s East Division with a 25-9, 25-17, 25-14 win over Wenatchee Valley at Spokane Falls CC.

The Sasquatch (27-9, 9-2) trail Blue Mountain by two matches with three matches left in the regular season. CCS plays at Blue Mountain on Saturday.

Daria Winckler had 10 kills for the Knights (26-4, 9-3).

Men’s soccer

Walla Walla (9-4-3, 6-3-3) took a big step toward making the NWAACC playoffs as Marco Acevedo scored at 54 minutes during a 1-0 win over CC Spokane (9-6-4, 6-4-2) at SFCC.

The Warriors lead the Sasquatch by one point for the East’s third and final playoff spot. CCS completes its regular season at home Saturday against first-place Columbia Basin.

Women’s soccer

Margo Hickman and Shae Yuma scored two goals apiece to lead NWAACC East champion Walla Walla (16-0-2, 12-0-2) to a 6-1 win over CC Spokane at SFCC.

Rylie Hill assisted on Tabitha Grow’s goal at 81 minutes for the Sasquatch (10-4-3, 7-4-3).

Both teams have qualified for the NWAACC playoffs, which begin Wednesday.

• Idaho earned big honors during the Western Athletic Conference pre-championship banquet at Ruston, La., including Coach of the Year for Pete Showler and Offensive Player of the Year for sophomore Chelsea Small.

Vandals sophomore midfielder Jill Flockhart earned first-team honors. Sophomore defender Lauren Layton (Mead High) and junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden (Ferris High) were second-team choices.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock added linebacker Beau Bell and receiver Lonnell DeWalt to their roster.

Bell was the Mountain West Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year for UNLV in 2007.

Alexia Pruneau assisted on Mikayla Wolff’s second-half goal and scored during a 4-2 shootout as Mt. Spokane (9-6) defeated visiting Hanford 2-1 in a Regional 3A match to qualify for state.

Rachel Jones, Shelby Hunter and Jessica Porterfield also scored during the shootout for the Wildcats, who play at Southridge on Saturday.

Prep volleyball

Tekoa-Oakesdale swept St. John-Endicott 3-0 at the District 9 1B tournament in Colfax to clinch a state berth. T-O will play for state seeding at 1 p.m. Saturday at Colfax against Colton, which outlasted LaCrosse-Washtucna 3-2 and upset Pomeroy 3-1. SJE will play a loser-out match at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against L-W. Earlier, Gretchen Van Lith had 15 digs as SJE swept Garfield-Palouse. Gar-Pal will play Pomeroy at 10 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out match.
