In brief: Keselowski Nationwide’s new champ

Auto racing: Brad Keselowski clinched the Nationwide season title by finishing third in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, giving owner Roger Penske his first championship in one of NASCAR’s national series.

Keselowski, who had to finish only 21st or better to wrap up the driver’s championship with two races left, crossed the line behind winner Carl Edwards and runner-up Kyle Busch to earn his 24th top-five result of the season.

Surprising Hulkenberg wins pole for Brazilian GP: Nico Hulkenberg of Williams surprisingly took the pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix, beating Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber at Sao Paulo. Lewis Hamilton of McLaren was fourth and championship leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari fifth.

• McLaren: Button escapes attack from armed men: Armed men tried to attack the car carrying defending Formula One champion Jenson Button as he left the track at the Brazilian Grand Prix, his team said. McLaren said Button was driven away from danger and nobody was hurt in the attack near the Interlagos circuit.

Rapids rally past Crew after penalty kicks

MLS playoffs: At Columbus, Ohio, Colorado advanced to the Eastern Conference final after Brian Carroll’s penalty kick at the end of the fifth round sailed over the goal, giving the Rapids the win. The Crew won the game 2-1, but the aggregate was tied 2-2 after Colorado won the first game 1-0 at home on Oct. 28.

Dallas eliminates Real Salt Lake: Dax McCarty scored in the 13th minute and FC Dallas hung on for a 1-1 tie to eliminate defending MLS Cup champion Real Salt Lake from the playoffs at Sandy, Utah. Dallas outscored Real Salt Lake 3-2 in the two-game aggregate-goal series. Robbie Findley scored in the 79th minute for Real Salt Lake.

Roy, balanced Blazers blast reeling Raptors

NBA: Brandon Roy scored 26 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 points and 10 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers cruised to a 97-84 victory over the visiting Toronto Raptors.

Jarrett Jack had 16 points and Andrea Bargnani, Leandro Barbosa and Jose Calderon all scored 12 for the Raptors (1-5), who finished a tough four-game West Coast trip winless and have lost five straight to Portland.

• Anthony leads Nuggets past Mavericks: Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points and the Denver Nuggets went 13 for 21 from beyond the 3-point line in a 103-92 victory over the host Dallas Mavericks. Jason Terry scored 26 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 23 for the Mavericks.

Bobcats’ Jackson fined for verbal abuse: The NBA has fined Charlotte Bobcats guard Stephen Jackson $50,000 for verbally abusing the referees after a loss to Detroit on Friday night. Jackson was given a technical foul by referee Steve Javie after complaining he was fouled on a made basket.

Ethiopians headline today’s NYC Marathon

Miscellany: The 41st running of the NYC Marathon stars two greats renowned for their versatility and longevity. The expected field of more than 43,000 runners also includes rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena.

Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, the men’s world-record holder, will race the 26.2-mile course through the city’s five boroughs for the first time, while defending women’s champ Deratu Tulu, 38, also of Ethopia, headlines a field of the world’s elite female runners.

Nguyen, Jarvis, Senti bounced at WSOP: Canadian poker player Matthew Jarvis was eliminated from the World Series of Poker in eighth place after coming one card from doubling his stack through Michael Mizrachi in Las Vegas.

Jarvis, 26, won $1.05 million in the no-limit Texas Hold ’em tournament. Jason Senti was eliminated in seventh place – shortly after Jarvis – winning $1.36 million. Cuong “Soi” Nguyen was the first eliminated from the final table, taking home $812,000 for ninth place.

• Federer beats Roddick in Swiss Indoors semis: Roger Federer made short work of Andy Roddick, winning 6-2, 6-4 in the Swiss Indoors semifinals at Basel, Switzerland. The top-seeded Swiss improved his career record to 20-2 against Roddick.

Federer will face defending champion Novak Djokovic in today’s final. Djokovic beat his Serbian Davis Cup teammate Viktor Troicki 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Italians take 2-0 lead over U.S. in Fed Cup: Francesca Schiavone got defending champion Italy off to a fast start in the Fed Cup with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against American CoCo Vandeweghe in San Diego.

Also, Italy’s Flavia Pennetta toppled American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-6 (4), 6-2.

U.S. surfer Slater wins 10th world title: Surfer Kelly Slater of Florida won a record 10th world title at the Rip Curl Pro Search in Isabela, Puerto Rico.

The 38-year-old surfer scored two barrels in the first five minutes of his heat against Brazilian surfer Adriano de Souza, earning a perfect 10 from two of five judges.

Ando wins Cup of China; Nagasu fourth: Former world champion Miki Ando dominated the free skate to win the Cup of China at Beijing.

Ando finished with 172.21 points, well ahead of second- place Akiko Suzuki (162.86). Alena Leonova of Russia was third at 148.61, while American Mirai Nagasu finished fourth.

Molinari keeps one- shot lead in Shanghai

Golf: Right when it looked as though he might finally give up the lead, Francesco Molinari made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 5-under 67 to hold off Lee Westwood at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

Molinari was at 14-under 202 and will be going for his first world title today. Luke Donald had a 68 and was four shots behind in third.

Tiger Woods shot a 1-over 73 and sits 10 shots off the lead.

• Shin takes two-stroke lead at Mizuno Classic: South Korea’s Jiyai Shin shot a 6-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead over American Stacy Lewis (64) after the second round of the Mizuno Classic in Shima, Japan.

Shin finished with a 36-hole total of 13-under 131 . Yani Tseng shot a 65 and was tied for third with Miki Saiki (67). Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.) shot a 2-under 70 for a total of 144.

Allen new leader after low round: Michael Allen shot a course- record 10-under 61 to take a one-stroke lead over defending champion John Cook in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in San Francisco.

The 2009 Senior PGA Championship winner had a 14-under 199 total. Cook, the winner last year at Sonoma Golf Club, shot a 67. David Frost (65) was two back at 12 under.
